My car pops out of first gear when trying to move from a dead stop. from the threads i have red on this. I think the transmission needs to be looked at. I want to get an idea on pricing from experienced members out there. should I choose to get a completely new trans how much would that cost including install? or maybe i could just rebuild the broken first gear? how much do yall think that would cost from experience? thanks I recently bought this dsm and i hope to restore it to mint condition one day.

If you are trying to find the cheapest way to get a good tranny in your car I would look for a good used or rebuilt tranny in the classifieds. Are far as rebuilding, you may have to send it out to one of the dsm specialty shops and get a quote from them for the work you want done. You may have luck, but most tranny shops don't want to take on rebuilding manual trams like these. It says ## in Colorado maybe JAckson auto machine is close to you.

Mine pops out too if I'm really slow on letting the clutch out. But of I'm quick on the clutch and let it out harder it won't pop out. But it also has 170k Miles on it. I also have the hard poly shifter bushings too. Check to make sure your linkage is all still tight, and that the bracket holding it to trans is tight.

I wouldn't jump right to say its a bad trans. I have 170k on mine, never missed a shift, never grinds, always shifts smoothly. Dosent matter if it's 7k rpm or 2k. It's a common thing from what ive heard

Intermediate shaft bearing on the bellhousing side. Very common in these transmissions.

I concur. I've seen it many times. YOu might be able to see the wear on the backside of the bearing plate if you take off the end cap and plate. If any gear contact is on the case or plate the bearings are done.

I have found that if you put the car in 2nd gear than go drive it while keeping pressure on the shifter and go on and off the gas you will feel the shifter move move forward and backwards.

While i'm driving when i press on the gas the shifter will move backwards and when i let off the gas it will move back to normal position.
is this what you're referring too?[DOUBLEPOST=1411853268][/DOUBLEPOST]

i've been looking for an answer for months and just cant figure it out thanks

and also bryanwheat what would the longterm damage be if i were to not to fix or replace the tranny. just curious.

Eventually there will be enough slack in the shaft that it will start to eat into the case, and wear the gears down.

I have the same problem with my fourth gear, pops out sometimes or if I do a pull unless I hold it in gear. Do you think that be a shifter fork Bryan?

Forth isn't real common to have that issue. Usually if it is the fork than 3rd and 4th will have issues. It it possible that it is the fork though, it is also possible that it is just a problem with the shift cable, a worn bearing on the the input shaft or just a worn slider and gear.

Had the same thing happen to my fourth gear a while back it also would grind just had to have it rebuilt, either no linkage issuses i was hoping for but it was old car.

Thank's Brian I guess when I do my clutch shortly I'll just bite the bullet and open up the tran to take a peak.

Try the method i listed earlier but instead of putting it in 2nd put it in 3rd. Inside the transmission the gears on the input shaft are 3 and 4 . 1 and 2 are in the intermediate shaft. If there is slack in the bearing than when you give it gas, while in 3rd gear you will feel the shifter move one way, than when you let off the gas it will move the other way. Try to apply pressure to the shifter when it is in 3rd, like try to push it further into 3rd, not real hard, but enough to keep the slack out .

Sounds exactly like what 4th does, I can feel it move for sure. When I let off the throttle it feels like it finally goes completely into gear yet it still pops out at times when giving it throttle. In 3rd I don't get any movement at all, very solid.
I do have another tran with a blowen 1st but but good 3rd, 4th and 5th gears, but don't have the proper tools to adjust/check gear lash and end play.
