Plug ur laptop DIRECTY to the ECU?

Ok im doing a lot of mods to my car in the next couple weeks... turbo and fuel upgrades.. and i have begun looking for tuning software. I was talking with a local DSM owner the other day about the SAFC II and we agreed it was a good software. He told me he was going to use a laptop. I asked what kind of software and he responded with Freeware. I was like what? like dsmlink? what about a chip? he then linked me here: http://www.tmo.com and told me a group of techie DSMers were finding ways to "hack" the eprom 95 and below ECU so u could plug ur laptop DIRECTLY to the ECU with no BS extra chips!!! Of course I was intrested. He then linked me to this mail group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HaltechDSM and said they were in on it. So my question, anyone heard about this? Details?

Good so far. Tunerstein and Palm'n'stein are an option for your 2g, and they're free, although you'll need a fairly pricy cable from Multiplex Engineering.

Dear ghod. Okay, first of all: the stuff TMO did back in the day was for 1g ECUs, and for the modified code, you'd need an EPROM ECU and the ability to burn new chips (like keydiver offers). All of this stuff has been 1g specific, aside from Jeff O.'s recent 2g work (which I don't believe he's made public, someone else can correct me on this one if I'm wrong).

DSMlink (as you correctly guessed) or an S-AFC are the best options for you to avoid having to replace either the whole ECU or the EPROM on it. None of the 1g reverse engineering work applies to your ECU.

The Haltech is a standalone fuel management system, much like the AEM offering and several other products. It's a functional REPLACEMENT for your ECU, expensive, and suitable only for those with clue.

Either this guy was messing with you, or had a 1g and had no clue about the tuning options for those of us with 2gs.

You don't need a keydiver chip to datalog with a PDA or a Laptop.

It's been public for a couple months now, IIRC.

As stated elsewhere here, the Haltech ECU is proprietary, with software specifically written for use with it. If you have a 90 - 93 DSM, chances are .... it doesnt have an EPROM, and chances are... that with you being unaware of that you would likely destroy your ECU attempting to install one. If that doesn't dissuade you... read up on BASIC programming, and I mean the BASIC language, not the description of it. Install a socket for the EPROM chip, and be introduced to a whole bunch of new and exciting problems. When you burn the chip, it's not like you can change it if it doesn't turn out like you planned. The way it works is... you will be providing the new "rules" to the system by way of "burning" in the code on the EPROM chip. I say this because from the posts found here, and elsewhere, one gets the idea that if you didn't like the results, just hook up the ole 'puter and punch in a few more things and alakazam... 10 second quarters. Now I could be wrong, but I don't believe you can flash these chips in the ECU like you can flash the BIOS in your home computer. And the heck of it is, writing code for your ECU without having any E&I skills or experience seems absurd. For the toll all of this will take on you, it seems so much more logical to purchase an aftermarket ECU that is tried and true. But who knows, someone may stumble onto a new "fix" that everyone else said couldn't be done, happens all the time.
