hey guys i was looking into getting a logger . This is what i found out from searches. I will need palm m100 or better 2) also cable to hook up. The palm has to be running os 3.0. 3) and i can get free software for it ??? (i am going cheapo way i know) Im not a track whore so its not biggie really. Also this logger will let me adjust air/fuel ? also clear codes ? and detect knock ?? . You can see my mods arent much. Its more of a learning proress for me. Thanks in advance guys.

A logger will do just that, log. Nothing more. You change things, with the tunning tool of your choice, and the logger lets you know the outcome. You will still need something to tune with, say AFC, accompanied by the logger. I would go with DSMLink if I had a 2G because it is just as much as the combo but doest it all in one.

Since you have a 95, skip the Palm and get a DSMLink. Since the 95's are the only 2G's that have an EPROM ECU, you're already halfway there.

I dont think a $600 program fits into this plan....

this is true. I dont want to shell out that much money for my daily driven race car  i know people frown when they hear that but i am a guy that normally goes for quality when i buy performance stuff but i am , in my needs maxing out things to do to my car. I dont have a need for a 10 sec car. This is my only car. If i had the money DSMlink would be in the car. Like i said before its more of a learning tool as well. I was trying to find a used AFC for my car . Hopfully if luck has it i will.

Well he wanted to adjust A/F...

An AFC alone is roughly $300.... Plus $100 for a Palm, $175 for an OBDII cable... all for a setup that still won't let you log knock.

I know which way I'd go, even on a budget, if I was buying new. I'd try to find a good deal on a used DSMLink, first, but if not, you could find a good used AFC/Palm/Cable setup for much cheaper. The only problem with that is the AFC's are easy to short out and kill, so it's easy to get jipped on 'em.

i might just have to put out the money for a AFC , i been looking around . Ummm some questions , are AFc's universal ? I see some that just say SAFC or AFC with no specs on what cars they work for. Also are they really that hard to understand ? i know you can cause damage to engine if you dont know how to use. My buddy can set me up though kind of think of it , hes great with DSMs

AFC's are pretty universal... you can use them on MANY imported vehicles, and even some newer domestics with a little work (ie, Ford Mustang 4.6L).

S-AFC means Super AFC, the ones with the blue screen. S-AFC II has a few more features and 12 adjustment points compared to 8 on the S-AFC.

AFC's are the old type that have 5 knobs... they work, but not well. Shoot for a S-AFC, and make sure you can get pic of it working before you buy it.

You may opt to do what I did - after getting a DOA used unit, I just decided to buy a new S-AFC new online. It was $285 shipped from an ebay vendor.

AFC is the original version. The SAFC is the updated one that most people have and the SAFC II is the latest and greatest. They all do the same thing and fit a ton of cars. Obviously the newest one has more options that is what I would get. DO NOT change anything on it till you get a logger and when you know what youare doing.

Here is your answer.

The SAFC will let you see some things, like Karmen Hz (the data from the MAS showing how much air is coming in, which is the signal the SAFC modifies before sending it on to the ECU), RPM, TPS %, and a few others. On 1G's, you can display knock with the purple wire mod. But you can't 'log' this information and store it for later, it just shows it to you in real-time as you're driving. To store and review the info, you'll need the logger.

K guys i think that i am going to go with a logger right now. Like said before its more of a learning tool for me now to understand the car more. I was going to go with a palm 105 (heard was better then m100) now i also need a cable to hook up to my car which i heard pocketlogger has for 20.00 and i can then use free software to check stuff out ?
logger - cheap 15.00
cable 19.95
software 0.00

total 34.95 not a bad tool/toy price huh

thats all i need correct

Timing (spark) advance, fuel trims, oxygen sensor voltage (front and rear), crank/cam angle sensor data, EGR temp, coolant temp, RPM, diagnostic trouble codes, vehicle speed sensor, throttle position sensor percentage, MAF Hz, and probably quite a few others I'm forgetting.

Where did you find this cable? Can you post a link? Most OBD-II cables are kinda pricey.

That looks kinda fishy... that one looks like it's going to require you to do some custom circuitry work to get it to adapts to a Palm or a laptop. That just looks like an OBD-II connector with a RS-232 serial interface on the end... you actually have to have circuitry involved to get the correct voltages to your Palm/laptop, otherwise you'll probably blow stuff out on both ends.
