Painting Valve Covers [merged]

the valve cover gets no were near 1200 deg. but ya still. NO reason to paint inside it and chance it flaking off

Anyone have a link to the specs on the engine temp? I didn't think they ran over 225 degrees.

That is coolant temp. Combustion chamber temperatures are alot higher.
 
think of egt's normal highway driving is ~1300-1500...what must the temp be in the actual chamber before it has had a chance to cool? 2000? now all the metal around that is up to high temps like 600 but the coolant keeps them cool
Don't paint the inside of the cover, you could ruin your engine
 
If you paint the inside, make sure you sand and prep properly, nothing dissapoints those judges like a poorly applied paint job to the inside of a valve cover. Which color did you choose for the pistons? My crank is blue, with yellow conrods.... :laugh:
 
I need a new valve cover too, best thing to do would be to call up the dealership. I know they are bloodsuckers but it can't cost more than $20

i want the inside of my tailpipe and headers to be like red or something....i feel it would look cooler...and the dude askin this question why the f%ck waste your time painting that crap if it wont even be seen
 
Its not even the fact that its not going to be seen. Its the fact of WHY!!!!??! There is no reason to do that. Once that paint flakes off its going right into the motor. Is that really where you want paint to be going?

Don't mock it too much.

It is not uncommon to paint the lifter valley in engines. The theory is that the oil returns to the pan quicker rather than lounging around up top. The same could apply for this syle engine as well. :p
 
No, it's pointless to paint the inside of a cam cover. There's not enough oil up there to be concerned with its drainback speed, and you _want_ oil up there for the cam lobes anyway. The valley of a V engine is slightly different, but still not enough to make it worthwhile. Some people just can't think of anything else to work on while waiting for the machine shop to get the next part done.
 
If you are serious, check out HPCoatings. they make a oil retaining coating that is used to coat the valve springs on NASCAR engines and a oil sheading coating that they use on the same engines on teh underside of the valve cover and inside of oil pan. Its suppost to be good for the mullet crew but I do not know about us. give them a email and they will respond back in reasonable time, Just be sure to identify the size of the part, what type of prep will be needed, and what coating you want.

As a side note they have a great coating (2 stage) that they use on IC and Intake pipes. Its $30 a foot, but they coat it with a thermal coating then a apperance coating. suppost to lower the intake temp 30 degrees. nice little paint. Also they have 2 places that can paint teh hyper extreme coating, 1 in the mid west, the other in australia. They used it on the local salt drag vehicles here in Salt Lake City. there was a 600 degree surface temp, colder difference, on the header pipe that was coated, compared to that of not coated. Think on how much better our exhaust gas will flow if someone was to try that with the ex mani, and turbine housing. Think it would decrease spool up time? The more heat that stays retained the faster it flows. that has to do something. I am thinking about doing it when I swap my engine. But I still have to wait a good 8 months for everything.

By the way, to do teh eclipse valve cover like the one on teh site, will cost 20-30 to mask off the letters, then 50 for a regular color, and 100 for the crystal (bling bling) colors. Again that is the price they listed for me and a few friends, but we do not need to pay shipping since the place is only 15 miles away.

They gotta do something to make those engines cost $100K. And of course, once you sell to one NASCAR team, they ALL gotta buy it.
 
True, but they are probbaly held in regluations arules to use that product as well. But if they have a mullet mobile push rod at 9000 RPMs for 500 miles. Well something has to work right. I do know that HPcoating exhaust (hyper coat) and intake coatings are great. Alot of peole out here use them, and it looks better and does not have the problems associated with common krylon connection rattle can crap.

Dude, maybe it's cause I got up so damn early today (4am) or maybe this really was just funnier than hell, because I laughed for like 2 minutes after reading this.

I know this is bringing back an old thread, but I wanted to respond to all the flake, I mean flak I'm getting. The reason was I bought a valve cover nastyer than most of your girlfriends, I mean nasty. The outside looked cool, but I wasn't too happy with putting a dirty valve cover on my engine, so I degreased it, it still sucked. So I took out a dremel and sand paper and got it down to metal.

I was afraid if I put it back on the car oil would get on it and rust. I didn't want to paint it for it to look cool. And it was just a question, I didn't know how hot it got inside of the valve cover. I don't know 10% as much as some of you do about cars. Quit insulting people who are trying to learn.

okay, first, inexperiance is not to be laughed at. Now since saying that, have you ever changed your sparkplugs? you know that little plastic cover that goes on top, and in the manual they state do not over tighten those bolt into the valve cover. Well the metal there is soft, just taking a stab into the dark, but probally, for the most part aluminum. Which does not rust. You should be safe just to slap it back on there, but do not hold any of us responsible for any damage, just clean all the shavings and filings GOOD.
