Ok, I've been wanting a paint job for my car ever since I got it over a year ago. I've been to a couple places and they all have quoted me over 2000 dollars, which I can't spend. I went to Spray Glo today for an estimate. Yes, I'm aware that they don't have the best paint jobs/warranties. However, here's what I came out with. Spray glo uses Sherwin Williams automotive paint. Current color on my car is Black Cherry w/silver trim. I want it to be Black instead keeping the stock silver trim as is. There are six different paint levels that Spray Glo offers. 1 being the worst and 6 being the best. I'm looking at getting level number 5. This is the Supreme Urethane package which includes the following steps: Complete Exterior, Single Original color, catalyzed primer-sealer, full polyurethane tech., hand and machine sand to remove the nicks and scratches, 4 yr warranty (pro-rated) against peeling and cracking, and a 2 yr fade warranty. Here are the necessary steps for painting my car, etc. The guy who owns the shop said my hood and spoiler would have to be stripped since of oxidation, etc. Other parts of the car would just be sanded. Here is the breakdown of the estimated charges: Paint is 300, Labor is 300, materials and supplies is 90.00, environmental charge 15.00, and tax 42 bux coming out to a grand total of 747 dollars. I didn't think this was too bad. He said he would mix in a little clearcoat for added shine. However, if I wanted a full clearcoat on top of the paint, that would be an extra 150.00 dollars. I'm thinking of doing this soon so I need everyone's thoughts/opinions... The black I'm thinking of going with is 'Viper Black'. You think I should have the bodypaint and trim/spoiler a different black? That is, keep the body paint the black color w/metallic and just have the trim pieces/mirrors/spoiler the regular Viper black... He said he would also add metallic to the paint--like the stock paint has. Oh, and I'm keeping the stock silver trim as is. That is, they're not painting it since it's in great shape:thumb:

The estimate also included fixing dents on dings of which I had a few:)

Here's a couple of things for 'ya.

1. Time is money. For $747, that's not much time at all, so what's that tell you about their investment into the job. Based on the $300 for labor that would be about 6 hours of work for the WHOLE paint job.

2. You get what you pay for.

3. He said that he'd mix in a "little" clearcoat for added shine? I custom paint motorcycles & cars and all of which receive 4+ coats of clearcoat. Clearcoat is what protects your paint, no clearcoat = your paint coming off every time any type of stone, pieces of sand, or any other road debris hits the front of your car. He's just trying to make you think that he's doing you a favor by saying that.

4. Who cares about their warranty for 4 years. It won't cover rock chips, just peeling & cracking as you stated. That is based off of bad prepping of the painting surface, which of course would be the painters fault, rock chips aren't. Then you'd have to get another paint job.

5. Save your money & get a decent paint job. It may be more expensive, but they'll get it right the first time, you won't have to worry about getting shafted on the deal, and they'll make sure that there are no runs in the paint.

I understand what you're saying. However, my brother got his car painted at Maaco's and it looks fine. It is oxidizing though after 3 yrs, but that was the warranty. Plus he doesn't take care of it. If I can find a decent paint job for under 2000 bux, then i'll do it. I ain't paying over 2000 dollars for a paint job on a friggin talon:) Maybe a supra, etc, but not a DSM. Thanks for the advice.

i heard macco doesnt sand it. they just primer then paint factory color. is that false?

Its an option.

Its part of a higher prep package i think.

I know when i went to maaco for a quote, it was 1500 for the highest prep package, full clearcoat, and 2nd best paintjob.

theyll sand. you just have to pay for it.

Wouldn't surprise me...if nothing else,, sand the car down yourself, then send it in for primer, paint, and clearcoat. :dsm:

something else you might want to take in consideration...
custom paint shades mean you cant use touch up paint... or make sure you get some extra already mixed when you pick up your car. I'll probably always stay mitsubishi black because i know that as soon as i get a nice custom paint job, some ass driving an 88 cutlass is gonna swing their door into the side of my car and take a nice chip out of it... then no touch up paint :(

I'm going to get an estimate at a local body shop on Monday that uses PPG paint. I've heard this is really good paint for the automotive application. I want to know if I should paint the spoiler and trim the same black as the actual car body... I'm thinking of going with Viper black w/metallic for the body and then just plain viper black (no metallic--sparkles:) for the trim/spoiler.
