First post so please forgive me if Im ignorant or stupid haha.

So i brought in my 1999 eclipse rs for inspection and it passed safety but failed emissions because of the P1390 code reading "skipped timing - one tooth or more". The mechanic I went to said the timing belt needs to be replaced and it will be around $310 for parts and labor. The previous owner of this eclipse said he replaced the timing belt not too long ago so I am unsure if thats the real problem. Theres no misfiring or obvious symptoms associated with a bad timing belt. the only thing Ive noticed is the lack of power under 2k rpm when you really floor it. I researched the code and found that it could be one or more of 4 problems:

1.timing belt improperly installed.

2. crankshaft position sensor improperly installed or connected

3. Camshaft sensor improperly installed or connected

4. Camshaft's relative position not relearned after service.

Any suggestions as to what is the most common problem. I think the relative position needs to be relearned since it was service before I got it but Im new to Mitsubishi.

I would suggest you start with checking base timing and also check that the timing gears are all aligned right and that none have slipped teeth.

It may be that whoever did the timing belt before you didn't time it right and the timing is off 1/2 or 1 tooth.

You may just need to reset the ECU.

If you are convinced that everything is as it should, then take a read through this thread to see how they solved it.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Anyone can say they replaced this or that but without proof I wouldn't trust them, they just want the car sold.

If your ecu is saying your timing is off then that's probably the case. You need to Google how to time a 420a and find the 2GNT.com because they have the best write up on it. Once you know the timing is proper then check out everything else you mentioned. You're on the right path. Or just get your belt changed and have them time it.

Soccer guy posted a good link but disregard his statement of setting base timing because that's for a 4g63 not the 420a.
