Just looking for some advice, I was considering purchasing this motor that is for sale on craigslist. It is a rebuilt motor with forged internals and has zero miles on it. The motor has been sitting about 6 or 7 years. Its priced fairly cheap for what it is. Not sure who built the motor but the guy claims to have all receipts for whats done to it. I would think that as long as the motor was covered up that it should be fine. I would think this would be better then buying a motor with 100,000 miles on it. Oh and money is tight right now so thats why I am looking at used engines.

For a motor that has been sitting that long, I would say at the very least tear it down to put some assembly lube on the bearings. Nothing would be worse than getting it in the car running then spinning a bearing because they were dry.

I would go ahead and check clearances as well while you have it apart especially since you don't know who built it. Along with the assembly lube already mentioned I would also use something like Lucas break in additive.
What all has been done to it? Brands used? Shop that did the machine work? Rust might be an issue as well from sitting so long so look it over good.

I would agree, if the price is right and it is a forged piston/H beam rod set up. Get it. Tear it all down, check all the common specs.

Figure you may want to spend a couple hundred mote on it to touch up what has been missed.

Good chance the oil galley balls were not removed from the crank, and the crud behind them cleaned out.
The other common thing not done is having the block decked.

If you can borrow an inexpensive bore scope pull the plugs and take a look inside the cylinders, You should at least be able to tell if he is telling the truth regarding the rebuild, what kind of pistons, corrosion on the cylinders.

Also along with everything said take a half inch drive ratchet or breaker bar with u an c if it even turns over, an make sure it's not locked up because sittin that long if there was any moisture in the cylinders the rings may be corroded to the cylinder walls or cld b rust on the cylinder walls that will keep the engine from turning over
