a dsm buddy of mine gave me the suggestion to run an open O2 exhaust on my '94 TYI. Where you just take the downpipe off the exhaust and let it ride. will that work and what will the absense of backpressure do to the performance? He said it was the poor man's 3 inch setup and since I'm on a budget of about $8.00 I need all the poor man's stuff I can get. Thanx

Well, the turbocharger itself creates enough backpressure for the engine. You would gain performance from running no exhaust. But here are the downsides. You would be dumping raw exhaust gas into the engine bay. And the sound would be obnoxious after the first 30 min. Also, I'm sure it wouldnt take long for the local police to cite you for it. I disconnected my downpipe once to see how loud it was, it's louder than having an external wastegate open all the time. Not something I would want to have.

take it to an exhast shop and have them make you a pipe to go from the turbo down and out below the engine bay. i wouldnt run with this all the time though... probably get lots of tickets.

Go to an exhaust shop and have them make you a decent 3in DP that connect to the stock exhaust. When you get to the track disconnect the Dp from the stock exhaust. Done. It will probably talke abotu 80.00 to make from the shop.

Other option have a buddy that can weld make it for a few beers.

I dont think the police will be that much of a problem I live in SC, and we dont have too many emmission laws. I think the sound will be the thing but not having it period will be a major problem. thanx for the advise. is there anything I can do to get a cheap performance exhaust I have a total of $8.00 and eventually want to run a full exhaust, but I need a quick performance joum on the exhaust side of things.

I am running an O2 dump, and when I hooked my DP to it, it was hand tightened. Obviously it came loose, and one of the bolts even fell out. So now its like 1/2 and 1/2.

The sound is incredible because I can hear everything about my turbo, not sure if thats the O2 dump, or the leak, but it sounds nice. It is a little on the loud side, but like I said it is still putting some into my exhaust system.

My engine bad is so dirty. Once again, this is partly from my O2 dump, but it still is very black on my fans and such.

Also the smell sucks, I cannot sit at a stop light long without smelling gas. I can't have my air conditioner/heat suck air from outside without it smelling like exhaust fumes.

I'm also sure that having the exhaust fumes in my engine bay cannot be healthy. I'll fix it soon so dont' bother tellin me I'm terrible or anything.

So I guess what I'm saying it, get a job, and just buy a $100 3in downpipe to run, or deal with the stock.

1. The words "cheap" and "performance" dont go together in the same sentence.
2. $8.00 exhaust!!??? You can't even make one out of cardboard mailing tubes for that price.

I took it off anyway to see how it ran, cause it's like 4 bolts and if it doesn't work you can always put it back on, and it ran great, the turbno spools up soo freaking fast now, and it doesn't sound all that bad, all the modded talons I run with are running open O2 and it's fine, thanks for the input tho.
