I don't know the right word for it but the difference is 3 bolt only has 3 bolt holes connected to the differential/axle and 4 bolts is 4 bolts connected to do differential/axle. its basically like 240sx talk when they sell axles and diffs.
 
I have a three bolt rear and is has worked fine since 2007 on rally car.
