I've seen a ton of people selling "performance chips" that will supposedly boost you up 75hp and add 8mpg to your car. Now I know that can't be true, but I have seen some people say that getting your chip tuned or something like that can help. Now I know nothing about chips, like at all.. except doritos. If I wanted to get one, how would it help, and what would it cost, and do I really need one?

So what you guys are saying is... I shouldn't get a chip unless it's megasquirt?

What people are saying is this;

The "Chip" you see advertised is NOT a chip, it is a resistor to fool the signal to your cars computer. It can and probably will f**k up your car.

Get an actual piggyback ECU controller, or standalone engine management system instead.

Edit: Actually, don't. You have a non-turbo. There would be no point.

So I should just get some Flamin' Hot Cheetos to improve my 2.784 1/4 mile?

The Flaming Hots are actually going to slow you down since they will cause your fuel to burn hotter when used as an additive. This will cause knock and retard your timing. I suggested Cheddar Jalapeno because it is the coldest-burning corn chip you can run without needing to upgrade your spark plugs. Running straight Cheetos is going to net you some troubles and I would recommend step-colder plugs from your nearest performance shop.

Hrm.. if you plan on going turbo in the future, the recommended method of tuning is Megasquirt. I wouldn't recommend getting any type of programmer if you are going to stay N/A since the power gains (or lack thereof) are not worth it.

I am planning to do a turbo kit in the future, I hope to have this car for around four years while i'm in college, so maybe in a year or two when I build up 3k to buy the kit haha.

You don't have to buy a turbo kit. You can built a similar kit for 1500 or less.

I would probably recommend buying a decent turbo manifold instead of welding your own. A lot has changed since this article but you get the general idea of what to expect. Also most go with a FMIC but I think the SMIC on a GS/RS is sleeper as all holy hell. Love it.

Yeah I saw that a couple days ago and was thinking about it haha, I wish they could go through all of the old HOWTO's a update them, that would be great.
