Okay so let's talk chips.

I've seen a ton of people selling "performance chips" that will supposedly boost you up 75hp and add 8mpg to your car. Now I know that can't be true, but I have seen some people say that getting your chip tuned or something like that can help. Now I know nothing about chips, like at all.. except doritos. If I wanted to get one, how would it help, and what would it cost, and do I really need one?

There is already a lot of information on this on here. A quick search would of told you no, a chip will do nothing for your car. Those type of chips are a sham and do nothing for you. If you had a turbo car with an eprom ecu than yes a programmed chip would be great, but not with your platform.

So not even a customized chip or anything will do anything at all for me?

There is no customized chip that will work for your ecu. Your ecu doesn't accept that type of chip. The only chip that is kind of compatible with your car is the pos inline resistors that they call a chip that will do absolutely nothing for your car. You will never gain 75 horsepower on your engine without a turbo or nitrous. You will not even gain 15 horsepower with every bolt on that you can buy for it.

What he said, The chip I think your talking about isn't a chip at all. It's a resistor that tricks the computer into advanced timing. With anything under 93 octane those so called chips can harm your engine. So don't do it! Even with 93 octane your looking at maybe a couple hp gane due to the timing bump.

This ^^

My friend put one on his car after I told him not too. He put it on anyway and it ended up causing some engine problems that he had to pay someone to fix.

I would do the bolt-ons youre talking about then get something totune the car with to take full advantage of the bolt-on but not a chip thats not even programed for what you have.

The "chips" you are talking about for your car will do nothing. This has been stated above plenty of times and I am in fact just repeating everything they have said, however I figured I would at least give you some advice on a certain chip you can buy that will put a smile on your face while driving.

Best bang for the buck IMO.

And just fyi in all seriousness if you do manage to get ahold of a known good standalone (i.e: Megasquirt) you will not notice much of a difference in a stock N/T with the stock motor and some bolt ons unless you used some form of forced induction.
:)

FYI..

Watch out for chips with Olestra or you may be replacing your seats sooner or later...;)
