Ok my 97 GST blew the upper rad hose 4 days ago and I just got around to fix it. I get in the car to start her up and the first crank was fine. The second time the starter wouldn't turn the car over unless I held the key in the start position for a few seconds. Now, once I get her started now the starter motor stays running the whole time.... Even after I turn the car off and remove the key. Did my turbo timer decide to take on a life of its own or does this seem like a switch issue? Never had a car do this in my 15 years of turning wrenches.....

Sounds electrical, like he said check the wiring of your turbo timer and where it's spliced, I'd say take a day to open up the steering rack and check all the wiring. It starts fine? no weird noises on start?

No. No strange noises. Starter, alternator, entire 4g63, whole engine and components are brand new and ran like a scalded dog up until the hose blew. I have a HKS timer with the correct wiring connector for the 2g. No splicing other than the e brake switch it all just plugs in. I'll just unplug the timer in the morn and see what happens. Like I said I can turn the car off and pull the key out and the starter keeps spinning the motor over even after the timer kicks off. I have to unplug the batt cable to get it to stop. Demons I tell you DEMONS!!!! Lol

Check your CAS or whatever it is 97's have to measure the cam movement. Sometimes if your getting spark and fuel, but it takes a lot of cranking till the car starts the CAS can be to blame. Had this happen on my dads dodge neon, different platform yes, same problem. Makes sense too if you think about it if the ecu cannot read how the Cam is turning then the car turning over will take more time.

Weak upper hose. When it split I knew it immediately and was 3 houses down from home so no overheat. Pulled the timer off today and same thing going on. Thinking maybe the coolant got into the starter solenoid somehow and is causing issues......

Check the wiring at the Starter position, When the starter stays ON, disconnect the cable (Black and Yellow) at the starter side, If it stops, then your Starter Relay is not good, If it stays working, then Your Starter is no good any more (Starter Selonoid).
Do that and post back the results.

I pulled the timer out and it still does it. I'll pull the starter wires tomorrow and post what happens. Thanks.

Your issue could be couple different things but sounds like a relay Shitting out disconnect the spade connector signal wire and make a new one to run to the battery turn ignition on and in neutral touch end of wire to positive car starts remove wire starter stops issue is in relay or switch shorting out if starters continues solenoid is shorting out

I've had the exact same problem and almost caught the car on fire due to the starter staying on and would keep turning over as the car was on and even pulling the key wouldn't shut it off, all I did was replace the starter and boom problem solved.

Your solenoid was shorting out I have seen it melt the coating off of 2/0 cables on big trucks u were lucky to catch that

Ok... Well I got it started this morning when I was going to move it to a different spot on the driveway to test the starter circuit, and it started fine. So I took her out and put about 50 miles on her and haven't had a problem out of it since. Started it up about 20 times thus far. Maybe just a fluke in the starter? But..... After it started acting normal a new little issue started.... I'll post a different thread on it but for some reason I all of a sudden have a a shit ton more power than before.......
