I just got done installing a new rear main seal and I want to check it for any leaks. My feeling is that it should be ok , but I wanted everyone's opinions on this- is it ok to start the engine with just the flywheel bolted to the crankshaft and without the clutch or transmission installed?

was your car leaking oil on top of your transfer case. cause i have a leak that leaks on top of my transfer case, but i dont see where its coming from. all i see is a wet oil pan and transfer case and floor. LOL but i thing you might be able to start the engine fine without the tranny or clucth. just make sure you engine mounds are tighten.

How are you rigging up the starter??

you have to have the starter to spin the motor..

DOH!:ohdamn: You guys are right about the starter. That part slipped my mind. I guess I'll have to bolt everything back up and maybe use the flywheel inspection area (sheet metal cover) at the bottom of the tranny to check for rear main seal leaks.

Ya, I had a lot of oil on the transfer case, pan and behind the flywheel. I cleaned everything up and replaced the rear main crankshaft seal. I'm pretty sure it was leaking. I also removed the oil pan to to seal it with the main seal housing at the same time to get a better, leak-free seal.
