at what point is this due for inspection / replacement. In my recommended maintanance book I didn't see that listed.

Lay the front case down say timing side down on a work bench,
then with the gears meshed and installed in the front case,
you use a straight edge laid across the gears then you use a
feeler gauge and check the gap between the straight edge and gear face.
I believe my Chilton's manual showed me how to do it.
What this measurement indicates is the amount of wear inside the oil pump on the inside of the front case.
