I had a massive oil leak from under my timing cover, so I took everything apart and took off the front oil case. When I took the sprocket off of the front balance shaft the oil seal just fell out. I have two questions there is a notch in the bore where the front balance shaft oil seal goes, should this be there or did a previous owner damage it? Second question is how the hell do I get this plug out that covers the rear silent shaft bolt.

I have never seen a notch in there before, they make a special socket to get the "castle" nut off, but they don't always work, I have the socket and always have trouble with it slipping, I ended up using a punch to loosen it up, chances are you will damage the nut and will have to replace it. If you do resort to a punch, be careful not to hit the front case.

It is alot easier to remover w/punch off of the car, looks like your already is.

This is a good time for you to replace your front cover, If you deside to remove your BS port the oil pump. I had an oil leak last year because the high pressure was blowing out the front cover gasket.

Also fill your oil pump gear case with assembly lube so you have a suction in the pump to start oil flow.

I already removed my bal. shafts. But this is my wifes non turbo I'm working on now so I'll probably leave them in on her car.

I think I'll have to get a oil case, does anyone know where I can find one?

Where would be the best place to get one of those castled sockets?

To get the castle plug out, use a flathead screwdriver and a small hammer. Tap at the plug counterclockwise, and it should screw right out.

If you want to just replace the castle plug and o-ring, the part numbers from the dealership are:

Plug: MD125376
O-Ring: MD041021

The front case assembly can be picked up from a variety of places, JNZ Tuning, Slowboy Racing, Diamond Star Motorsports. You have your choice of either Topline or OEM. I've used both with no problem, but it comes down to price (Topline costs less) and what you feel comfortable with using in that engine.

Just like the last guy did, at 12:00 and 9:00 on that one. Looks like he tapped it back in at 1:00 and 5:00.

I'd use a thin coating of RTV on the outer edge of the front balance shaft seal to make sure it doesn't leak at the notch. RTV also helps hold the seal in so it won't pop out next time.

Terribly sorry for hijacking the thread, but could you explain a little about porting the oil pump? I've recently had the BS shaft removed and now I'm leaking out the front cover. When I pull it apart over christmas holidays, I want to hit all the bases before I put it all back together.

The oil pump doesn't need to be ported. If you're leaking from the front cover, your culprits are either the gaskets, or the front seal. Both items should have been replaced when you removed your balance shafts.

If the oil pressure is too high, there is a bypass port on the oil filter housing that needs to be enlarged. Follow the links in this thread:

Thanks for all the help fellows. I'm gonna get a new front case from SBR. I just don't trust that old one with that notch in the seal bore.
