I am going through reasons why my car is over heating. We are just about to replace the head gasket. I have a bolt on the valve cover that the previous owner of the engine broke off. Oil comes out of it once in a while and dropps onto the header... Smoke is fun....

Well anyways,

I was wondering if there is a oil pressure that needs to be sustained. Would that hole on the valve cover create an overheating problem? It only overheats when I am driving longer distances... Around town it is fine.

Thank you very much!

Certainly a blown head gasket can be a big source of overheating but you didn't explain how you arrived at this conclusion.

You could be running lean from the valve cover leak which will contribut to running hot. There are plenty of other things including T'stat, fan(s) sensor, plugged cooling system, bad water pump to mention a few.

You should repair the broken bolt but if you have to pull it down may as well wait until the head is off.

Cheers,
GTM
