What is the normal oil pressure for a [DSM]?
Oil pressure is directly related to

the ambient temperature
the engine temperature
the amount of oil in the engine
the engine speed
When changing the oil you often end up with a slightly different amount of oil in the engine then you had previously. Less oil means less oil pressure - add a little more oil and the pressure will rise.
Also, the oil pump is driven by an accessory belt. Operating the engine at higher speed runs the oil pump faster, raising oil pressure. Consequently, oil pressure is lowest when the car is idling (and hot), and will rise during cruising.

Normal oil pressure on these cars is between the Low and Mid mark when idling, and between the Mid and High marks when cruising. These marks, unfortunately, do not correspond to any known psi rating.

Limited testing by DSM owners with mechanical oil pressure gauges indicate that DSMs tend to have around 70-90 psi of oil pressure while cruising, and only 10-20 psi while idling. Cold starts can generate oil pressures of over 100 psi, a fact verified by the DSM manuals when discussing proper oil filter selection.

Consistently low oil pressure while driving could be an oil leak, or a bad oil pressure sending unit. Be careful

Everything said above is correct except for "the amount of oil in the engine", unless your oil level drops below the oil pick up (which will generate 0 pressure), the amount of oil in the oil pan has no bearing on your oil pressure.

Again, this is not correct, those numbers (way too high) are more in line with a motor without balance shafts and/or oil squirters which requires proper porting of the oil pressure relief valve to bring pressure down to where it should be. Normal oil pressure for a stock engine should be:

Cold idle : 25 - 30ish psi.
Idle : 5-10 psi.
Cruise/WOT : 10psi per 1k rpm.

what kind of oil pressure guage should i get that reads 0-?:talon::talon:

May I recommend a Defi gauge? They are great gauges and the "blue racer" series doesn't require the control box. I use that version for my boost gauge and it is great!

You want a gauge that shows at least a few dozen above maximum allowable pressure.

A stock motor will run about 75-80ish psi at redline. So you would want at least a 0-100psi gauge.

You can find Autometer ones (new) for like $10 on ebay.

I searched the whole ebay caint find any like for $10 i have autometer sport comp guages so i want the electric sport comp guage to match my guages if you can find it please post the link:talon:

You seriously need to learn how to use ebay. I've gotten a $400 package for $80 before. Remember it's not just how the buyer searches, but how the seller lists the items.

Runs an ebay search for "sport comp oil" and watch the magic fly.....That's right $0.99 for the gauge you want. BRAND NEW. "How?!?" you ask. Becuase the seller listed it as "press" instead of "pressure." So while 15,000,000 are searching for "Autometer Sport Comp Oil Pressure Gauge" and bidding on those few that they find. Only about 4-5 are loking for "sport comp oil" and there is no competition for those.

Here.

But aren't these gauges mechanical oil pressure gauges? Which means oil has to run through a line and into the cabin?

Yes, most are. I have a full sweep Fuel pressure gauge. It was NOT cheap.

Autometer isn't the only company that makes inexpensive gauges.

Check out the VDO and Isspro gauges, they make both electrical and mechanical gauges.

He specifically named a certain brand and series thats what I delivered.

OP already has a pressure sender.

Wow Im amazed but thats the problem im looking for a electric not mechanical i know they sell them its not full sweep but they got them id rather get A full sweep but i dont want to get a different type then my guages dont match........

unless you are trying to build a show quality interior (or you are a touch on the OCD side), remember that when it comes to performance, function comes before form. in my Mustang, i had 3 different styles and brands of guages, but it wasnt a show car. i will do some searching and see if we can help you find what you are looking for, though.

autometer.com will let you search out the exact guage you are looking for and it will also let you look up the closest place that you can buy it at. check out the site.

my oil pressure was fine i was running 10-40 then i did a oil change and now im rinning 10-30 and now it reads oil can it be ### of the oil weight???????? :barf:

is there any performance oil pump if yes can ou please send the links....

its a 93 eagle talon tsi awd 2.3 :talon:

What exactly are you asking? You used to run 10W40 oil, switched to 10W30, and now......

Are you talking about a difference in the reading of the stock oil pressure gauge, or an aftermarket gauge?

I probably wouldn't run either weight. Do a search for "oil pump" and "oil types" and read up: seems alot of people agree that these cars live better on 20W-50 than a thinner oil such as you are running. I personally reccomend Valvoline or Castrol GTX 20W 50, but this is just my opinion.

:talon:yes the stock oil pressure guage iam using catrol gtx full synthetic and i ran 10-40 oil pressure was high now i rand 10-30 and the oil pressure droped could it be ussing thinner oil.... and whats everyone using as weight of il in there car......:barf: im ussing oil pump what is your guyd recomand using whats oil weight and will it affect my oil pump im using stock i think it wouldnt mater but never know...... Thanx guys for your help

You really have to work on your grammar. It's very hard to read what you're saying. First off, the stock gauge is almost useless. How did it act before and how is it acting now? Does the needle budge at all or stay at the bottom?

it moves but now since i changed the wights it reads way lower then it did before

The stock gauge tells you next to nothing. I would recommend installing an aftermarket oil pressure gauge that tells you an actual number. You should be safe as long as the idiot light does not come on, which signifies an unacceptably low oil pressure.

:talon: K thanx I will do that im ordering autometer sport comp. electric gauge....

Were is the oil pressure sensor ? If its possible please send me a pic so i know where to hook it up... i seen there 2 sensors one in front of the car next to the filter and one in back of the oil pump... i took the one off the back of the oil pump and i was reading 100psi at cold idle and stayed at 100psi... this is not right so maybe iam puting the sensor in a wrong place i dunno...
