oil press 100+ after install

i just did the whole electric oil press gauge install thing. i turn the car on and the needle shoots over past 100 instantly. did i install the sender in the wrong hole?

The sending unit just replaces your original OPSU. What kind of oil do you put in the engine?

When the car is cold and you start it up. your oil pressure should be at about 50-55 psi until it warms up. After you reach correct operating temperature your oil pressure should idle between 10-17 psi and while driving it will rise from 50psi at lower rpms to about 70 psi at WOT.

Are you sure you hooked up the wires correctly? You could just have it grounded out or something possibly, so the needle pegs as soon as power is applied.

I agree with X. There isn't anyway that gauge should read that high, especially at idle. I would guess it's wired wrong, or the gauge is faulty.

Make sure you only plug in the aftermarket sending unit. Not the stock one with it. It won't work together.

ah ha. ok i was told i could leave the stock sending unit in as well. so much for that idea. ill give it a go tommorow. thanks guys.

Why wouldn't you be able to leave the stock unit in? Chris left his in, and as far as I know, everything works as it should...

As far as I see it, you could have the stock OPSU, an oil feed line, and an electric gauge...they should all see the same pressure

All I know is that when I first put my guage in, I just never connected the oil light back up.

When I went to the dealership to have them look at my alternantor and help me figure out why my car was starting, the tech plugged it oil light back in.

My oil electric oil pressure guage would then start geeking out and pegging 100+ etc, and just start flipping out. And the oil light would come on and off and start flickering etc.

So I unplugged the stock wire that goes to the sending unit and it stopped.

I've got an autometer electric oil pressure gauge, and I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but it works for me. By the time the oil light signals me something is wrong its probabaly too late.

I should mention, the tech is a friend of mine, who helps me out on the side. I really couldn't afford to really let the dealer get a hold of it.

ok so i took out the autometer sending unit, and left the gauge powered so its still reading 100+ psi. im gonna try working with the gorund wire and see if that helps. i powered the gauge by splicing into the LED's ground/power lines.. could that be my problem?

I think i'm confusing the whole situation. And when I'm talking about using the sending unit, I'm actually talking about the power wires that go to it.

I have to get under my car today anyways and do basic maintance, so I'll look and see if I can better figure out how to explain my problem.

hmm i dont think so. i'll doulbe check though. i switched my power/ground wires, and now the needle dropped back down past 0. my neighbor who is an electriction, and is pretty hands on with his jeep thinks i had my power and gorund switched, so once my car cools off a bit I'm going to go put the sender unit -back- in, and see what kind of reading i get, or lack thereof. hah
