oil pan hole

What could cause my oilpan to get a hole in it? I was driving home one day. Heard a pop shut the car off, and looked under the car because I smelt oil, and noticed a dime size hole in my oilpan, and oil just pouring out. There was nothing in the road. Could it be something internal?

Does it look like its dented into the pan? Post a pic.

It is possible. The whole, does it form inward (towards the motor) or outward (towards the ground)? If its towards the ground, then its something internal, if its inwards, then something hit it from the outside. If your unsure, take a pic.

any signs of rust? could of been road debris ... drop the pan and have a welder repair it. shouldnt run you more than 100 and than have it powder coated for good sake.

Repair it for no more than $100? You can get a new one for cheaper than that!

Are you sure the drain plug didnt fall out!?!? Not likely but possible..

It should be obvious which direction the puncturing object came from.

I didn't get a chance to look at it. But the hole is in front of the oilpan, at the front of the car. I will post a pic when I get off work. I know for sure it's not the drain plug

Is your car lowered at all some roads are not perfect and slight bump could of scraped a small hole in it
