Yes, either cracks or also a leaking 710 cap. You may want to check the seal on it. After time it will become hard and not seal and under WOT leaks oil.

whats a 710 cap, does that contain the coolant? That might be what I have a prblem wiht. Thanks

what about the oil in the valve cover where the top of the spark plugs are located? theres oil in the corner and in the front. how can it get there?

It can leak from the cap down into where the spark plugs are

Autozone has oil caps that fit DSM's for like $5

On the subject of JB weld, The direction says to remove all dirt and paint. My cover is powdercoated, I cracked a little by overtightening the pcv. Can I just put the mix on top of the coating? Thanks.

If the oil cap isn't too bad, you can spray some Tire Wet on the seal and it will freshen it up a bit until you get a new one. However, they're only 10 bucks max at your local parts store ;)

You can actually replace just the gasket on the oil cap for just a buck or two, but I don't have the part number handy. Even a whole new OEM oil cap is only about $7-- I just got a new one a few weeks ago.

However, for the original question, my money is also on the spark plug gasket/seal thing.

have the same prob wit my car. turns out a had a huge crack on my valve cover from im assuming the dealership b/c they were the only people to work on the car prior to me getting it. well i ordered a new valve cover , and gasket set. changed all that crap and i still get the leak.

i've had the problem for ages, and just getting around to fixing it. if you want to make sure that it will go away and stay away, do what i'm about to do.

I need new plugs and wires, so i picked them up at the same time of picking up some oil and a filter. also get yourself some engine flush, and if they still sell it at your dealership, some mopar (or mitsu) combustion chamber conditioner. pick up a valve gasket, some spark plug gaskets and a oil cap gasket. go for the cam gaskets too if you want, i did for the hell of it.

fluch out your engine by pouring in the engine flush and letting idle for 10 minutes, or use the mccc as directed, and then drain your oil. take off the valve cover, it should be pretty clean so you can locate any cracks. do some searching or listen to these guys in the replies to fix the cracks, replace the spark plug gaskets on the cover, and you're somewhat there... pull the plugs and wires out, toss 'em. do a little search and do the vaccum leak test to see if you're in for more than you thought, then put in the new plugs and wires...
add a new gasket to the cover after using a scotch pad to brush the old gasket away, and if you really have problems, use a little Gasket sealent where it was leaking before for extra measure. NOT TOO MUCH

put on the cover (if you did it too tight you're a moron everyone knows by just using the search method for 30 minutes that you cant torque the cover down a lot), add your new oil, then start her up. let her gurgle and choke, spew out her nasty white smoke and then she should be running like new. after that, i could GUARANTEE that there should not be any oil left over for a long time. if there is, go get yourself a new valve cover real soon before you cook your new gaskets too much to have to get new ones all over again and then, my friend, should you not have the headache of oil all over the engine bay again.
:thumb:

p.s. it cost me about 200$ canadian in parts, but should be well worth it. when i do my leak test, i know i will find more leaks, i think its the intake manny gasket, or the little O-ring in the throttlebody cause theres a bunch of oil near my injectors as well. may as well check all over and make sure while your car is down, that it doesnt need anything else.
all i can say is make sure you have a whole day or a 2nd car to drive for a couple days if anything else shows up... i know my baby is gonna be down for at least a couple of days (hah what else is new)

Just get a new oil cap (it comes with the gasket) and slap it on there and you will be fine. I had the same problem, put the new one on, and no more leaks.

Found oil on top of valve cover and down in the right spark plug. Car is sputtering bad and some little backfires. Any suggestions. Just changed O2 sensor. Thanks

Sounds like your spark plug gasket need replacement, unless your valve cover has a crack somewhere, have you checked?

but most likely you'll need to replace your valve cover gasket and plugs gaskets, also you might have to do some good cleaning before re-install.

Thanks that was going to be my next project. Any things to watch for or prepare for.

dont over tighten the Valve cover. 2-3 Foot pounds. That is all! Change all the gaskets may cost you ~40$ but will be worth it in the long run.

This happened to me...just a new oil cap hah. good luck

It's also a good idea to bend the tabs on the cap toward the cap so they put more force on the gasket where it seals to the valve cover.

I had a problem like this. It was because my PCV valve was bad. I would change that also with the valve cover gasket.....

just changed the valve cover on my 91 tsi due to the same prob,, get in there with a clean wrag, clean all that oil out and around,, then start the car up and look to see where the oils coming from. watch for "sqwirts or little bubbles" not realy bubble but sometimes the small sqwirting beeds of oil can look like bubbles bubbling up.

if you find nothing, remove the valve comver in start inspecting it further, and also the seals.

as far as making your car run bad, make sure your oil level is where it should be ,, a properly seated sparkplug is not going to allow oil into the combustion chamber, possible a spark plug wire end full of oil cauzing a not so good connect?. clean everything and inspect!. either way probaly not a big deal. may need a new cover like me at the worst.

I have the exact same problem. I'll be fixing it tomorrow. It was easy to tell on mine just by looking at which spark plug wire had all the crap built up on it. Also, if you pull out all your plug wires and run your finger around where each gasket is, you should be able to tell which ones are bad. Good Luck!
