I have had an oil leak for months now. I have to add maybe 2 quarts between oil changes...not too bad. The leak is coming from somewhere inside the front cover. I guess I'm just looking for suggestions on what could be leaking. Also would this be a good time to remove the balance shafts?

Thanks
Brian

The front cover of what? I take it you mean your Valve Cover? If so, you just probably need to replace your valve cover gasquet. It's very easy to do. You can get the main gasquet, and sparkplug well qasquests for about $36 from any Mitsubishi dealer if thats where your oil is coming from.

Sorry for the confusion. I meant front case. I've been looking for parts and on SBR's site they call it the front cover.

Is the front main the same as the crankshaft front oil seal?

I have to replace the crankshaft oil seal, balance shaft seal, and oil pump seal when reinstalling the front case. Would I be better off just doing a BS elimination?

Thanks

Yea the front cover is behind the timing belt on the drivers side of the car. That is not an easy job its not that hard it just takes time because so much has to come off. The front main seal is the same as the front crank seal also. If your going to do the front cover gasket I would also replace the timing belt, alternator, AC and PS belts as well as the water pump. If your going to do the BS elimiator do your homework on the job to do it corectly.

I was told that the if the front crank seal needed replaced that oil would be leaking onto my timing belt. My timing belt is clean and in good condition, but i'm still gonna do the timing belt and pulleys while it's apart.

I'll keep everybody updated. I'm in the process of moving so I think I will just wait until I have access to a garage.

Thanks

I have the same problem as you as well as some oil leakage on the Bellhousing of the tranny. I assume both Crank Seals are to blame so am going to be replacing both hopefully this weekend.

FYI.. the BS eliminator kit only includes the parts for the elimination. You will also need the asst'd gaskets (filter housing, front case) as well as optional maintenance items: belts, tensioners, pullys, waterpump, oil pump gears..etc. Fun = Nope.

It is my intake camshaft oil seal. I can't believe the mess that that little thing can cause. I was convinced that it was my crankshaft or oil pump seal, but they do only have around 30k on them and the oil tracks start right at the center of the intake cam sprocket.

But it is a great time for a timing belt/water pump change :thumb:
