Hey guys i am new to the whole dsm things so please forgive me if i ask a dumb question and yes i have looked for threads on this just want a striaght answer of my own. This is the thing, i just bought a 97 gsx with 16g turbo, short ram intake, and jdm auto tranny, fired up but then cut out like it had no commpresstion. pulled oil cap and got water under cap so i have water in oil. Question is do u think its just a head gasket i can fix with new metal ones

i bought car for 800 bucks only 123000 miles sound like i did good?

You need to do a leak down test to verify it is in fact the head gasket. It's most like it, however, if you over tighten the oil filter onto the housing, you can crush the passageways in the "oil cooler" to allow water and oil to mix. Just do not do any driving until it's fixed and you need to see how bad it is in the pan. That milkshake will destroy bearings by not allowing proper lubrication and it's best to have the whole block and head cleaned out.

As per the MLS gasket. In order to properly run a MLS gasket, you need to have both the head and block surfaces milled so that they are at a mirror shine. If you can catch your fingernail while dragging along the surfaces then it's not a good sealing surface to use for a non conforming gasket. If you do have a good surface to use as per above, the OEM MLS gasket is what I would recommend to use over the Cometic.

The OEM composite gasket has held up to 40PSI with the appropriate head studs and other sealing methods. It has also held 30psi without having an o ringed block. You'll want to get new headstuds (ARP) to be able to withstand the higher pressures that you apparently want to see with going to a MLS gasket.

I second the oil cooler, if you change the head gasket and still have issues.

When you get it running. Reroute the coolant past the oil cooler, run the car and if it's bad it will drip oil.

Definetly have the head checked for warping while you have it off. Any decent engine shop can do this for a fair price. You'd hate to replace the gasket, put it all back together again just to have it start leaking again. Nothing worse than doing the same job twice.
