Hi, I'm doing a 6 bolt swap with an N/A block and am almost finished with it, all I need is the oil cooler, now my oil filter housing for the 90 N/A doesn't have a cooler you know the"sandwich" type so I want to use an external oil cooler. My question is can this n/a filter housing be used to run the 2 lines for the cooler with out having to buy a sandwich adapter plate? Which threaded taps on the housing to use?

Is this the exact same filter housing used in the turbo (stock) 90 external oil coolers?

Thanks in advance!:thumb:

The n/a housing having no thermostat renders it useless for an external air/oil cooler. Getting a '90 turbo OFH would be easier and trouble free.

do a remote mount filter & use the n/t housing. It costs more, but there are some added bonuses.

the downside is that you need more lines, an external thermostat, external filter mount (hello to 1qt oil filters), and the spin on adapter, and the nice giant oil cooler. It's definitely more work than a '90 housing, but there are some definite advantages (more clearance by the downpipe, bigger filter capacity, etc.

That's the way mine is set up anyway. [shrug]

Thanks for all the quick replies guys..
It's all great info..

I 'm trying to keep this as cheap as possible so as much as I would like to go with the remote filter, I can't. It's a great idea though.

Street Surgeon-
I did see the website you mentioned and found a 6 bolt oil filter housing for $52.74 but it doesn't have the "sandwich" oil cooler, it comes ready for one though do you know if the cooler form the 7 bolt housing fits the 6 bolt's? Does any one know...?

See there is this guy in dsmtrader who is selling a comlete housing/cooler for 70 bucks but he sounds kinda shady about if it's or not for a 6 bolt ... so I rather thrust a DSM shop.

the six bolt & seven bolt filter housings are different, and you need the correct one for the block.

I would buy the 1990 style with no cooler attached, and then later add the cooler. Better to run without than to chance the oil/water mix-up possibility. Once you get the 1990 housing, you're only about $150 away from having a nice giant bolt up cooler with stainless lines as well. I actually made a post on this topic before with a complete parts listing...

I know that the 6 bolt and 7 bolt housings are different and that the bolts wil not line up if you don't use the correct one maching the front cover..

But what I'm asking is that on that website (jnztuning.com) they have two different housings, one is the one you are talking about, the 90 style (used when using external air cooling) and another one that as specified in the website it's the stock 6 bolt water cooled unit, but doesn't come with the "sandwich" style cooler, you are supposed to use yours, so I want to know is if the 7 bolt's "sandwich" cooler fits the 6 bolt's housing.
That way I can order this housing and use my 7 bolt's "sandwich" cooler with it.. If anybody has any idea le me know..

I see what you are saying about the possibility of the oil mixing up with the water but I'm on a tight budget rigth now. By the way that post was great info...

Just get the 90 turbo filter housing and use that. Much simpler. I'm running a nt 6 bolt block with turbo internals and a 90 turbo oil filter housing with diamond start motorsports oil cooler kit.

Why? Do you have to have a thermostat to run an external oil cooler? Im hooking up an external kit right now to my nt engine that I turboed. Cant you just run oil through the cooler all the time? The kit Im using is used so I dont know the name but it looks like a higher quality kit with a sandwich adapter, and braided lines. Also came with dual filter relocator mount. Hopefully itll work properly everything is connecting well.
