oil catch can set up i put together....

I have my catchcan drain plumbed back in where the balance shaft inspection bolt was.
I threaded some hard break line, and screwed it in.

On a couple passes when the engine was fairly new, it filled the catchcan up and puked oil out. Not sure if I had alot of blowby, or if I had to much oil in the motor. Hasnt done it since then though.

Interesting. How big was the catch can itself? I have only emptied mine once, well once with any sugnifigant oil in there. And I run my car VERY hard twice a month and build up lots of pressure through there. Just curious was all on the size of it.

As far a my placement, I guess you can see it decently enough in the photo above. It just goes from the crank case where you would normally have your intake tube coming from. But like I said, I have never really had a lot of oil in there.
 
Many of your high powered 4 cylinders run a catch can setup like Mike has made, tho not widely seen in the DSM world. Larger lines are better than small lines because they will carry more vapor than liquid. Inducing the vapor back into the intake system can and will cause knock. On a normal to mild car it's no big deal but on a high powered/high boosted car it's important.

Its a 1qt catchcan. It only did it 2 or 3 times that one day. I made probably 10 passes (at the track) since then, and havent had a problem since.

Still intersting. Like you said, you might have had too much oil or something in there that day. At least it has not done it anymore on you.
 
Most tend to agree a vented catch can like this aren't ideal as unmetered air gets sucked into the intake via the PCV system, under vacuum conditions. Though in this application it looks like the PCV system has been deleated (which most tend to agree isn't the best idea either). Hooking the catch can outlet up to the pre turbo intake (like the factory setup) is usually said to be ideal as you get a vacuum effect from the turbo, pulling additional air from the crank case.
 
i did suggest this setup to him and it is going to be up around 700 whp when its rebuilt i think this setup is very suitable for how the car will be in a few months (and now too because of the rediculous blow by it has) and i dont think its even an ounce of over kill......... now everyone can have there own opinion about that one and thats ok. the guy did want the bling factor so that is why there is steel braided lines though. i could care either way on that one........ as for the vented to atmosphere and drain back part..........well if it didnt have filters then it would have to be routed back into the intake and thats not happening with the intake that going on the car. ;) as for the fittings........ the valve cover fittings are -10 and the drain is -8. the line.............. got me on that one my boss picked it up.............whatever fits the -10 and -8 fittings??? oh and my neon is set up with a reroute but im not making a bunch of power like the guys that run this style of catch that i have made in the pics.

Daren and Anthony know that I am a proponent of the configuration of the stock crankcase ventilation system (with the addition of a check valve and catch can(s) at discussed in other threads). However, I think it is also important to realize that considerations given to a daily driver may be different than those of a track only car as it sounds like this particular one is.

Too many guys (usually you younger ones :p) do things to their cars because they see racers doing it without fully understanding why or the consequences of these mods. For example, imagine having this setup on a DD where you are dealing with daily stop and go traffic. Not only will you likely have insufficient CC ventilation but what does vent through the open filters will end up in the cabin of the car. I know from past experience :coy:, those noxious fumes can make you sick.

Having said that, the quality of work and aesthetic value is very nice. Mike, did you fabricate the box/container yourself? Nice welds.:thumb:

Fair enough. But a customer who is (specifically) willing to pay extra for this extensive "bling" factor probably isn't someone who is a die hard, take-it-to-the-track-only sort of individual. Sounds like the individual not only wants to wow people with gody numbers, but equally wants the girls/newbies to "ooo" and "ahhh" when he pops his hood. None of us who knows what is going on under the hood will be impressed by the shiny parts. I would bet many of us would immediately think "What a waste." It's a waste of time, money, and effort.

Also, talking with people who have run open element air filters off the nipple for crankcase ventilation have told me there is one every noticeable thing after about a month or so. The engine bay becomes noticeably dirtier. Just another reason (even if it's an aesthetic reason) to avoid doing this, especially if you have taken the time, money, and energy to clean up the engine bay.

And if you have a 700+ whp daily driver, you're either really smart, or really stupid.
 
Well, instead of venting it with filters, you could run a line with a one way check valve to the exhaust with a slash cut tube in the exhaust. Under high exhaust flow it would create a useful vacumm.

I've wanted to do that, I just havent gotten around to trying it.

I would also agree with what Romeen posted above, whats good for a track car may not be so good for a daily driver & vise-versa.

Was just wondering what kind of intake is going on this car, that you can't or don't want to re-circulate?

When I was refering to recirculating the catch can to the intake, I was refering to the inlet pipe pre turbo (ie metal pipe (or rubber from factory) between MAF & turbo), which would be the same style connection as stock. If your inlet & outlet connections on your catch can are near the top of the catch can, you don't have to worry about "gunk" getting into your intake system. I have had my JM Fab sealed catch can setup in this configuration for the past couple of summers & there is zero traces of oil/gunk in my intake tract.
 
^^^^ This is also how I have mine setup. But everything aside. The construction and installation is very clean. As he said, this is what the guy wanted and he delivered what the customer wanted.

That is a very ingnorant statement. Just because someone wants his lines to match every other line, and he doesn't want to use the dsm standard fuel hose from autozone, doesnt mean that the person isn't a die hard, it just makes him not a cheap dsmer. SS braided lines are pretty much overkill for anything that any one of us will ever need, but you still see it for many things. I know people who are die hards and run ss braided lines and -3 line for vacuum hoses. Guess what, his car makes well over 600whp and he is one of the most die hard dsmers you will ever meet.
 
yep im in there also :thumb:.............. u think my setup is over kill there are some k series guys running -16 lines on the cars WTF
