Lol, I'm just curious, how many of your engines are like 85% RTV LOL (Exaggerating), Cause I've noticed Oil Leaks are a common topic on dsm?? Is it that bad?? And where does it usually come from? :thumb: :dsm:

I just rebuilt my engine, head, tranny and slapped in a new turbo. I'd say 95% of my car is RTV LOL ;)

I cant stress enough to use Ultra Grey RTV. I used to think the high temp shit was better but one day well I was at TRE I noticed Ming only used grey to rebuild trannys. I asked why not high temp and he said because its shit and grey is the only thing he noticed that held up so I gave it a try myself.

I pretty much used grey on everything for my rebuild an its holding up VERY well. I can honestly say I did not have ONE!!!! oil leak after my rebuild other then my turbo oil line and thats just because it wasnt in tight.

I RTV'ed the oil pan, little, VERY little on the oil pump gasket, water pump, my WHOLE tranny was done with Permatex Ultra Grey and so was my transfer case.

Nothing with grey leaked or has started to yet.

O and they like to leak around the front case or pan from what I've seen if they do.

I'd be willing to bet the MOST common oil leak comes from the valve cover gasket.

All I have to say on the RTV topic is its NOT a replacement for legit gaskets.

RTV rocks. Ultra copper on high-temp areas, gray on oil-soaked areas. Gaskets aren't worth a damn. Just blew another intake manifold gasket, but my RTV turbo outlet and throttle body gaskets are still going strong.

Oh no doubt a replacement, just like a temporary wheel if I ever encountered something and I was hurting on cash. Or if I just replaced a gasket and its still leaking I would reinforce, but thats when I GET a dsm LOL.. Can't you tell I want one bad.. heh

im more partial to "the right stuff" by permatex. best stuff ive ever used, but on my rebuild id say only 5% of the engine has it on. i bought a gasket set
