So I replaced my TB shaft seals and when doing so my idle went up to 1500rpms. While fixing that, I noticed that at 1500 rpms I get a really nast squeal that sounds like a bad bearing or belt. It only seems to happen consistently around 1500 rpms and only a little bit at other rpms.

I'm a bit concerned because I don't know the condition of the Timing Belt. I have service records from the previous owner showing all the normal stuff from 70,000 miles as far as water pump etc, but it doesnt show if they replaced the belt, tensioners, etc. I'll probably pull all the accessory belts and check pulleys for them once it warms up a bit. But does anyone think I'm asking for trouble by driving it as is?

I'm going to throw this out, but I'm not going to promise that it's happening in your situation if you've never noticed it before. If you're running a 1g BOV like your profile says you are, there's a chance that it's the BOV making that noise. Mine will make a whistle that sounds like a tea-kettle, or a metal-on-metal, squeak at certain RPM's, but only while driving. If it's happening while the car is stopped and just revving, I'd say check the belts.

I know the BOV thing is probably pretty rare, but the more you can rule out, the better your diagnosis might be. Good luck and if you find out what it is, let us know.

I really can't imagine exactly how the squeal sounds but I have a suggestion that will rule out your tranny bearings. have a friend in the car push the clutch in and put the car in gear, this will freeze up all of the trannys internals, including all the bearings. rev the engine up to where it squeals and see what you've got. this test will rule out the tranny bearings. if you can tell us which area the squeal is coming from and the pitch of the noise we can give you a better idea of what the problem may be. Goodluck. -Griff

if its an acessory or belt....you wont be doing any more damage by driving it for now. The device could fail...or wear out quicker - but you want to get it taken care of ASAP...nobody likes to wait..and waiting doesnt do anything accept make things worse.

Pull the belts off of the alternator, and PS pump and your AC drive belts.
Drive it around real quick and see if there is still a squeaking. Your car will be HELLA fast becauase there is now - no drag on the engine from all the acessories, but you will suck your battery and wont be able to drive far...if you want to rule out a pulley/bearing/belt...this is the best way to rule out all of them at once.

good luck man.
