Ok I have just started to notice a strange noise coming from my 97 GST. It is a whining noise that seems to be coming from my trans that only happens when it is in gear. If I put it in neutrel while coasting it goes away but while in gear and accelerating, it gets louder the faster I go. I have looked to see if anything is rubbing the tires but have found nothing. I have no idea what it could be and need to find out before I leave for a trip this weekend. Thanks for any help.

Are you sure it's your transmission and not your turbo? Have you check for shaft play yet?

No I have not yet checked for shaft play but I will do that. But the thing is that even when I am not accelerating and just coasting with it in gear it will still make the noise. But thanks for the tip I will check that out when I get the chance. Anymore input is greatly appreciated.

Yes I have. I had a new starter installed last week and then this morning it would not start. I then waited 2 hours and then it started. Could this noise be my starter? Thanks for the input.

Can you hear the noise when its in Neutral and the car is sitting still with your foot off the clutch? Or does the clutch have to be in?

Could be a belt, an accessory belt. Do you have any tranny leaks? When my motor mounts tore my tranny case into pieces, I ended up doing a clutch/flywheel job and It leaked....a pretty good leak too. Well It made a similar sound your taking about.

Me thinks your start may not be disengaging your flywheel. I'm going to ask someone's opinion. I havn't heard of this problem on a DSM in a long long time, and having trouble remembering if I'm correct. I've seen it on other cars before for sure though.
