Is a '95 TSi OBD II? I was under the impression it was '96 and newer. Thanks for the help.

1996 was the year OBD II had to be implemented. However, there's a handful of cars that were done by 1995; in the case of the DSMs, they'd just gone through a major re-design to come out with the best.... er, that is, Second Generation of T/Es, so it was brighter for them go ahead and set up the ECU as a II instead of making another stepchild as they did with the 90s.

ok sorry to bring back dead links but i dont know to start a new post or not and i am interested in buying a 1g to just get away from emissions ( ie check engine light making me fail ) and i was wondering if i get a 95 i hear there exempt from from emissions.

reason im asking is cause 1gs are ugly and 2gs are sexy LOL

95 was the first year with ODBII connector so some people may not think it is ODBII, all vehicles 96+ were required to be ODBII. Some cars actually had ODBI and ODBII, crazy! :)

I just bought a cat coverter off of a 95 rs to put on my 96 gs and the guy at the muffler shop told me the 95s were obd1 because the cat didnt fit on the 96s

This would only be true if there was a o2 bung after the cat, so he may be right, but he could tap a bung and that would work.

The guy at the muffler shop was wrong. He's under the same impression that many older folks are, (such as a a cranky old man at a Milwaukee Emissions Facility); that if a car is '95 or older, it MUST ABSOLUTELY be OBDI and CANNOT in ANY WAY be OBDII, because as EVERYONE knows, that started in 1996.

Yeah.... I got in a fight with him. He tried telling me that if my car was OBDII, then it wasn't a '95. And if it was a '95, then it wasn't OBDII. :D Okay, sir... whatever.

As long as your car has an OBDII port, then yes, you can use an OBDII scanner. Just look right under the dash near the gas pedal to find the OBD port (at least that's where my OBDII port is located). I believe more '95s have the OBDII than not (seeing as that's when they switched over).

Edit: Added a picture to show where it is located. You can see in mine I have that big plug connected to mine.

Yes it's obd 2. Autozone told my brother his 95 tsi wasnt just because it's a 95. 96 was the year obd2 was required for all cars, dsm just did it a year early. He took it to another shop and they hooked it right up.

Ok, I am looking to buy a cheap code reader "scan" tool, I have a early 95 with a 94 build date. Is my car ODB 1 or 2?.. I have searched and can't figure it out:confused:, I even got on 2GNT.com and asked but that site is so confusing! I couldn't even find where I asked the question at, when I went to look for a response.. So if y'all can possibly give me a link to a good cheap scanner tool that will work for my early 95 it will be much appreciated :thumb:

cars are always produced a year ahead. for example a 2008 car is produced in 2007 have you noticed how dealers have 2009 models when its actuallly 2008. So you have a ODB II. The cars year is always refered by the date that its first sold as, they dont go by the production date.

Oh ,yea I remember when I was little, I used to think how weird it was that cars came out a year early ROFL

I just thought I had read some where that it was different on early 2g's, and I wanted to make sure before I bought one of these tools.
Any advice on which tool to get?.. I'm kind of thinking the cheaper the better:thumb:
And thanks for the help so far:dsm:

Im glad Defiant stepped in its an OBD-I car not II, our scan tools are more expensive and require adapters for different vehicles. I also have a 94 build date
