So,I've been working on my build, 99 2g GST and I'm now at the point where I'm looking to buy a new turbo. Yes,I know all about the good upgrade to a evo III. Unfortuantely, with all the knock off sales these turbos have gone up in price from around 5-600 to about 2 times as much. Any suggestions on a good turbo I can get with a budget of 800? Looking for something that I can use at stock power with my dsm as well as something I can build with. I'm not looking to set any records or really ever push too hard. Just looking to make a good every day reliable ride with a little push if I need to.

Thanks

They didn't go up in price because of the knockoffs. They went up in price because of supply.

Are you willing to run a rebuilt used turbo? If so, a Evo 3 16g is well withing your budget with a little extra cash for some supporting mods.

I was hoping for the dream that one day the knock off phad would die off and prices would come back down. WORST COMES TO WORST and I will end up getting a used rebuilt. Before that though,I'm looking for anything else that's good quality.

Instead, Mitsubishi decided to cut production on the OEM turbo from a 1995/1996 car and put it's pricing into the realm of what other OEM turbos have cost for years. To a company worth billions, they could give a shit how many Evo III 16G's they sell in a year and likely aren't even aware of the Chinese Evo III market aside from copyright infringement.

Limited production, devaluation of the American dollar, and natural disasters like Japan's Tsunami have all contributed to the rise in cost of replacement parts. It has nothing to do with eBay, and the price isn't likely to come back down.

WOW that is a bummer. I had no idea they went up soo much. Glad I got mine when I did. Well if I was in your boat I would check classifieds, ebay for a real one or look at a bigger turbo for the price.

Thanks for the info. I definitely know now I'm either looking for something else now or just looking for a company who purchased enough of these back when prices were down and can provide something around the budget I have

It is a bummer. Especially considering that I was going to buy one in december for around 600 shipped and it's been less than 6 months since and I can't find anything under 899 before tax and shipping. Just a few more dollars, but that's a few more times hundreds.:ohdamn:

Wow reading this thread made me look at prices, I was going to recommend the FP68hta they were about 900 when I was looking at them but its up to almost 1200 now, which really sucks because im about to start a build myself.

the holset hx 35 might be a good choice, they sell used for 300 to 400, they are extremely reliable turbos. They build boost quick, and can flow 50 lb/m. you would have to get a BEP housing or swap to a t3 manifold. You would still be under 800 for all that though

Holset or Precision. The precisions are mitsu flanged(or can be). I cant wait to test my 5858 out.

You can buy a used 16G or 20G and have it rebuilt. That would yield a practically new turbo for well under $800. Truthfully, for $800, you can buy damn near any street sized journal bearing turbo you want. It really boils down to which size compressor wheel and turbine inlet you want.

Thanks for the info guys. Highly appreciated. Now I at least know in what direction to look.

saw a MHI 20g the other day for 600 obo with 02 housing and lines on it, i can find the link if your interested. i plan to switch from my 16g to an hx35 here in the future when my truck gets a new turbo

I'd appreciate the info on this.:thumb:

I was considering selling my MHI 16G here within the next few months. Its obviously used but has very little shaft play, I'm also going to go with an Hx 35 or 40 not sure just yet.

I had no idea they jumped that much in price though that's almost crazy.

I agree, I bought one for my GST since it wasnt an all out build. I see them all the time for sale in the marketplace and they are very affordable.

I'd say a hx35 for 3-400 and if you ever blow it up they are cheap to rebuild. I have a buddy who has one and it was a decent DD and when he changed tune and boost it was a monster.

Thanks guys,I appreciate all the info. Looks Like I'm going to look into the turbos you guys suggested or just bite the bullet on a Evo III

that 20g is posted here as well with manifold for 650, its a real MHI that ready to go , thats a good price. id sell my 16g and get it if i could, or trade him but hes goin bigger not smaller sadly

hx35 on my truck will more than likely be my upgrade when my truck gets a new turbo, they are a great setup and super reliable too. My truck hack over 300k on it and minimal shaft play, boosts to 38 psi will no issues, a cheap rebuild when it comes out and onto the car it goes
