so im trying to piece together my 96 gsx shell that i picked up about a month ago. finally got the engine and everything in, but i noticed when i turn the key to "on", the only lights that comes on is the "anti lock" ... the CEL and all the other safety lights dont come on. (see pic #1... thats w/ the key in the "on" position)

-i DID get a new key from the dealer: it works the door locks, when i turn it, it will cycle the fuel pump, control the power for the windows, and also upon turning it, i hear the relay for the ignition click.

-if i hotwire the starter the car turns over and runs for about 10sec then shuts off. the rpm gauge works when i do this.

-i have a wiring harness from a 97-99 in the car and the ecu is a 1995 eprom. (see pic #2)

any clue on why im not getting the rest of my dash lights?

This may seem like a silly question but, have you checked the bulbs? Also, are you using the appropriate sensors for the 95 ecu (like CAS etc.)? Every light won't light up of course but if there's a bulb, it should light up when you turn the key to on.

well the engine i have is out of a jdm vr4... which is i guess considered a 1g 7bolt. same as the 95-96 engines, so im assuming i already have the correct cas signal

i didnt check the bulbs themselves, but none of the dash was taken out when i got the shell so i assumed there wouldnt be an issue there. to have 6-7 bulbs ALL blow on an untouched dash would be too weird.

is there anything else i should double check that would affect me not getting warning lights? (plugs, connectors, ground, etc...)

Nope, a VR4 was only in production from 91-92 ( yes there were a few sold and produced prior to '91 but from what I understand they were unbadged numbered. However in 91-92 there was not a 7bolt motor so your VR4 engine is in fact a 6bolt.

I really have a feeling your bulbs are out. Check those before messing with anything that will cost money. It could also be the previous owner took the CEL bulb out to fool any possible buyers. Just a thought.

its def a 7 bolt.... just got done installing a fidanza flywheel/act clutch. only reason i assumed it was a vr4 was due to the intake/ intercooler piping direction. may be a rvr and not a galant.

as for the lights, i plugged in the airbag computer and the srs light came on. then locked the doors and the security light came on. plugged up the alternator and the battery light came on. i took it a step further and plugged my obdII scanner to the diag socket and it had no current or pending codes. i spoke to the guy i got the shell from and he said he didnt touch anything (plus he knows 0 about cars). im gonna rip the cluster out in a few hrs to check for any missing bulbs. where exactly would i find the bulb? and is there a way to test it if its there? any pics/diagrams?

could it be thats its just a faulty ecu? i opened up the ecu and nothing looked melted. and when i hotwired the starter all the plugs had spark so id assume its still ok.

well i got around to pulling the dash, and believe it or not, the bulb WAS out of the black twist-in connector  so i plugged it back in, twisted the connector back in and the light still didnt come on... so i switched it with the known working battery light: still didnt come on. then the srs light: still nothing.

the board looked ok (see pic #1) so now im running out of ideas. i opened the ecu back up and saw some corrosion (see pic #2), but i scraped it off with a pointed piece of paper just in case it shorted any of the connections on the board. ive attached other pics of the ecu too, but everything looks fine to me.

anyone have any more ideas? could my ecu just be bad?
