non turbo engines, are they safe for turbo

I was just wonderin, say you were to get a 2G non turbo car whether its the esi gs or rs. Is there anything different in that engine versus the factory turbo engines and if so what is it. how safe is it to put on a turbo kit to a non factory turbo engine? looking forward to reading the post, thanks -tooley-
