Non LSD Dif

What's up guys, swapping my Manual non lsd dif with an Auto Non lsd I picked up. I had a few questions, for one what is this plastic piece that's on top? I can spin it, is this kind of like an overfill?.. also in the other picture you will notice that the axle doesn't quiet go into the dif all the way, assuming because the little metal coupler is suppose to be the spacer, where can I purchase one of these? Thanks for any input.

Are the auto/manual rear diffs interchangeable? Didn't think they are due to having different ratios.

The non-LSD and LSD axles are slightly different lengths. Or one side is. Easy way to yell if you have an LSD or not.

They are different ratios I'm swapping to auto, and this is a key piece I need. I thought there was a metal piece that went in between the two. Any idea what the top piece is?

I don't think there's a spacer there and I just installed my rear axles not too long ago. You probably have the wrong axles.

I figured the part out, no spacer.. the ring that is on the axle isn't allowing it to enter the rear dif.. I took it off and it goes in. I'm not sure exactly on what should be done there? Do they need to be pushed in and locked into place? I also took the cover off and counted the drive splines, which came out to be 43. This is suppose to be an AUTO non lsd rear dif from a 95. I found specs on a 97-99 but not sure if it is the same as a 95-96. I can take a picture as well if that helps.

Perhaps this will help the visual part. I found a guide on counting the splines but not for an Auto from a 95. Here is a picture, anything to look for to verify that is what it is would be great. Also I'm not sure what to do about the whole ring thing.. I tried to put it back on and put it inside of the t case and it still won't go.. but slides in perfectly without it.

You just give the axle a good pop with that ring on and it's in. The top plastic piece looks like a vent which many diffs/transaxles have.

Awesome, any sure fire ways to tell if the Dif is in fact a non lsd auto?

I've actually read though that man. It does help me as it would mean my dif is a Auto Non lsd BUT that's the cover.. my cover is significantLY lighter than the dif It's self leaving me to,believe it's been changed. Rather be safe than sorry.

That picture above is showing an open diff. So if you look in and see that shaft in the middle, it is open. Plus, I do not not think that you can fully insert a non-LSD axle into the short side of LSD diff.

I'm not an expert on viscous lsds but I'm fairly certain the viscous chamber is connected to one of drive(axle)shafts and other part of chamber connected to back of ring gear so the action happens outside the carrier and appears open diff inside carrier..

That's correct, but now how to tell if it's a 95 Auto? It could be a manual, or it could even be a 97 to 99 which I believe had a different gear ratio. Perhaps I'm mistaken.

I haven't really found out to tell if it's an Auto or a Manual rear dif, aside from the cover which looks to be aged differently.. I suppose I'll take my chances if I can't find out. Should I put a bead of RTV on the cover, when I took it off there wasn't anything sealing it.

Well that's an easy one, unless I'm misunderstanding. Anyway-
"... you need to secure one wheel (perhaps by lowering the tire onto the ground), then you can figure your gear ratio by rotating the airborne tire TWOfull rotations and counting the number of times the pinion rotates. 3.73 turns means 3.73 gears. If you only rotate the tire once, then 1.865 turns means 3.73 gears..."

Thanks for the link, I installed the dif, but can't seem to get the axles to go in. I put the chamber nut and hit it a few times to no avail. But yet slides right in without that ring..

Okay, I'm having a strange problem.. I put my differential in, and can get the driver side rear axle in, but not the passanger side.. I even took off both rings just to be sure that wasn't the problem. I'm at a loss of what's going on.

I seem to have found my issue.. taking a closer look at the axle I took it off the car just to be sure it wasn't an alignment issue.. It seems that the splines at the very edge are rounded just enough for the axle not to go into the car.. is this something that I should just buy a new axle (spendy) or would I have the option of using a file and filing it back to what it should be.. my only worry on that is that it will eventually end up stripping out. Any thoughts?

That they would, fortunately enough I went out there and gave it a good push and it slid in. I was under the assumption it was going to slide in on its own just as my other one did. I'll be seeing if it's an auto or manual tomorrow more than likely. Thanks for everyone's help.
