Sounds almost like your timing belt is slapping against the timing cover. Doubt this as you would most likely jump teeth if the belt was that loose.

I would start by inspecting the external drive belts and pulleys. If everything there checked out I would try to pinpoint where that "slapping" sound is coming from by using a mechanic's stethoscope. Once I found the source location I would dig in further to ID the cause.
