So lately I have been hearing this noise coming from my engine bay around the timing belt, for a while I thought nothing of it i figured the belt might of been too tight or something then the noise went away. Anyways tonight as I was getting on the highway I went WOT and when I went to park my car the noise started up again but it was louder, so when I get home pop the hood and the noise is cleary coming from somewhere near the timing belt, it sounded like it was coming from the crankshaft sprocket (if that's the biggest sprocket down there) anyways anyone have a clue what this noise is? It sounds like you know when your on a roller coaster on the way up the huge hill that chain noise as it drags you up....that's the only way i can describe the noise, also the timing belt was changed when i first bought the car so I don't think it needs replaced. Any help would be great!

It could be your crank pulley vibration dampner is starting to come apart. You need to get up close and personal so you can examine the vulcanized rubber bond between the hub and the pulley. That would account for the clunking, squeeling inside the cover could be the belt tensioner or idler bearings. You probably should get this diagnosed fairly soon and stay away from any hard driving.

when i looked closely the belt was vibrating alot, it sounded like it was coming from the big sprocket i'm guessing that's the crankshaft sprocket? I'll mention something to my dad tomorrow he's a mechanic so taking it to a shop is not big deal, anything else i should check for?

I think we have nailed it down. Should be able to find one in Philly, start calling around in the morning, they are not cheap but your dad may be able to take some of the sting out. They make rigid pullies but I read a lot of complaints about vibration after the install.

Keep us posted on what you find.

You need the crank pulley/vibration dampner, it's all 1 piece. I seem to recall something like $150?? for factory part. You may be able to find aftermarket copy for $80 and used from $20-$40. You probably not going to find too many in Lancaster that's why I suggested trying Philly.

I feel 99% certain this is the problem, have your dad take a look. If the vulcanized rubber bond completely breaks the outer portion which drives all the outsided belts falls off on the road, you have no alternator, power steering, water pump etc. and now need a tow truck.

ok thanks man for the quick response, do you know any vendors that sell this part?
It has been said time and time again on the Dampner Pulley, to go to the dealership and buy it and don't go aftermarket. I just bought mine from the dealership $112 with the DSM discount. It's a critical part to be going aftermarket with. You can test for sure if it is has come apart apart by taking some white out. Make a line across one side of it. Run the car for a little bit and then check to see if the lines are still meeting up. It still could be going bad if the lines are still lined up, but that is the way to check and see if they have seperated already.

what's wrong with the aftermarket pulley's?
From the posts that I read, they don't last as long and aren't as good quality as the factory ones. Not to mention the fact that when I looked I only found 1 aftermarket manufacturer of an after market dampner pulley.
