Hey guys.

I’m hoping someone here can help me pin down a noise.

Edit; new links - WITH SOUND!!

It comes on at about 2700rpms and stays till redline.

Motor is a 6Bolt. Has made this sound since the swap. Things I can tell you it isn’t;

Alternator- has been rebuilt with a new belt.

Power steering - belt actually shredded and noise persisted.

Turbo - 2 different turbos have been put on.

Accerssory pulley- 2-3 have been put on/swapped.

Timing belt/water pump*** - this were changed. But by a non DSM mechanic (he was a general mech) so maybe he didn’t do something right? The sound was before he changed Timing belt and after.

Any help pointing me in any direction would be great.

Thanks in advance.

That sounds vibration related, maybe your rear balance shaft is out of sync, if your mechanic isnt up to speed on the 4g63 balance shaft phase requirements then it could be 180 degrees out on the back shaft very easily.

Interesting. I do know the guy who did the swap. I’ll have to double check with him.

Edit; I’m pretty sure the balance shafts were removed durning the 6 bolt swap.

That sounds like a/c pulley freewheel bearing is toast causing the pulley hit the clutch mechanism. Past that we'd need more pics as it sounds like it resonates from the rear of the engine bay.

Also since you're p/s belt shredded, you might want to check alignment, under load/rpm it may be stressing the pump shaft and contributing to the noise.

Take all the belts off one at a time and check. It almost sounds like something rubbing on the front cover. Hard to say but definitely sounds like something in the accessory drive. I've had harmonic pulleys make noises like that when they start slipping.

And make sure that the PS pulley and Alt pulley are facing the correct direction, it can make a belt shred pretty quick if they are accidentally backwards.

I am running with the A/C still (it can get hot here in So Cal), so I will definitely look into that. As far as I can tell, the A/C unit is still the original one.

And based on your thoughts, and the thoughts of other replies in the thread, that’s where I’ll start my search.

Thanks everyone. I’ll update with a post when I get after it.

@TK

I know. Time flies man. :(

@FullSend

ya. It had been making the noise for a couple years before I even made the original post. At this point I have accepted that it’ll be with me until the end. Lol

I have had this same belt squeak at first start for 6 years now. Still embarrassing but have replaced everything attached multiple times and it has never gone away. Me and my neighbors live with it now LOL
