I have recently bought a 92 talon FWD non turbo from a kid that decided to upgrade it....I helped....I gave hime the head...ECM...turbo (20g) intercooler...pipes....lines...knock sensor...instructions....and he did a good job getting it going....recently had transmission problems...he got a rebuilt trans...out of a 90 turbo model...and installed an ACT 2100 clutch..pressure plate...and alum. flywheel....he had the hardest time finding a starter that would catch the flywheel...all parts stores sold him a starter that just spun and didn't catch....so he push started it for 6 months and wrecked it...so I bought it.....now I'm too fat to push it....LOL...tried aftermarket starters for 89-94 turbo...no go....tried for 89-94 non turbo...no go....tried 89-92 1.8 l no go....ripped out trans and measured act flywheel...which was for a 90-91 awd turbo...to oe flywheel...92 talon fwd non turbo 2.0...everything matches up...can anyone help me...I'm a master ASE tech and cannot for the life of me think of what to do...Aint this a B*****....anyone with a similar problem and some advice would be helpful...and the back plate is not the problem for I have tried shims to no evail....

It's extremely difficult to understand what you have and haven't done, but if you have an awd flywheel in the car with a fwd transmission that is your problem and you need a fwd flywheel.

The flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch was for the AWD model. I removed the assembly and measured the teeth to the original fwd non-turbo 2.0l flywheel, excactly 106 teeth on both flywheels. I then measured the installed gap of flywheel from crank, the same on both flywheels. Also measured the total diameter of both flywheels, the same. I'm going to bolt the fwd flywheel up, then the transmission, and the new starter tommorrow and test it, if it misses then, I'm leading towards the bellhousing on the tranny. The transmission is a rebuild from some performance transmission supplier, and it could be a bell housing from an automatic...or a different model. I have no clue but it's annoying me at this point.

AWD flywheels have a smaller O.D. sounds like you may have 2 AWD flywheels.

smaller flywheels makes sense. I put the old flywheel back on today, bolted the transmission back up just for peace of mind, and the same thing happened. The starter bendix is just spinning freely and not catching the flywheel. I talked to the kid I bought it from and he said he had no issues untill he replaced the transmission with a rebuilt upgrade. Unless the Old flywheel is an AWD, which is possible, I've narrowed it down to being the wrong transmission, or bellhousing. Anyone know where I can get information about a transmission from the serial number stamped on it? I cannot find the VIN

search the trans part number here or on google. you should be able to find some info.

your missing something, you have the wrong trans or flywheel. you need to know what part number trans the car came with and flywheel. or your starter is junk.
