for the past couple of weeks my car will not start on occasion.. Sometimes it will start fine, typically for a day or so, when the car does not start and i turn the key to being to start it, all power cuts out, lights, stereo, ac...everything..I have searched and searched.. there is no "starter noise" only when i pull the fuse for the ignition on the battery terminal..the row of fusible links... typically when i play with the box on the positive terminal ( the row of fusible links) the car will eventually start, but lately even that is not working..

im desperate for help..

Once again i have searched.. :talon::talon:

i have searched and i cannot for the life of me figure out why my car (1994 talon tsi) will start somedays and not start other days, all the accessories have power until i try and start the car, then all dash lights, head unit, headlights, tailights, lose power..everything loses power..I replaced the ignition fusible link, but lately when i push and fool around wtih that for a long time the starter finally makes a noise and the car sometimes starts, other times i could move the fusible link for a long period of time and still get nothing

can someone pllllleaseee give me some help..

i have searched.. just looking to get some feedback on what i should do/try:talon:

One possibility is a weak bettery, then all lights and stuff turns off while cranking.

Or you have a defective starter, but that i have never seen.

Or one/some wires are short.

How does the cranking feel when its working. More weak and slowly, or is it strong?
Do you hear the "kack" sound when turn the key for cranking? Or is it just silent?
Does the lights go off even when it wont crank?

i checked my battery it read 12.5 volts..

I just checkd my starter relay and there is supposed to be volts present at the relay..well there was none..so maybe a clue?

I do not hear anyting at all when i try to start the car, its not cranking and the lights and evertying go off at that point, :talon:

Have you tried getting someone else to turn your the key while you were under the hood? I recently just had a problem similar to yours and it was my starter and i couldn't hear the clicking from inside the car.

no, so it should be clicking when I try to crank it over correct?

It seems like every time the key is turned it kills everything. I'm not really sure what to do at this point. How do I rule out a starter and would a bad starter allow it to start one day, and the very next day or even later that day, it doesn't start?

The clicking is a sign of either the starter or the starter solenoid not working as it should and sometimes you can just tap on the starter (with a wrench or something lightly) and then you might be able to start it up. And yes a faulty starter would make the car start sometimes and then again give you nothing sometimes. As for turning the key and it killing everything i couldn't tell you.Is your car a manual? If so try to roll start it and see if that works.

All the power dies when I try and turn it over. Is that related to the starter?

I checked the starter relay and there was no power at the relay, I may have done it wrong but I did it according to my Chiltons.

I forgot to mention I heard a clicking from the alt relay area not necessarily from the alternator relay just in that general area.

The power dying shouldnt have any relation to the starter. Is your car a manual if so you should really try to roll start it and if it starts let it run for a while and see if the power to the inside dies (lights and radio ect) if so then it could be the clicking near the altenator relay thats giving you the problems. Also if your not sure you might want to double check and see if you checked the starter relay correctly.

thats what i would say too. check the batt cables... but what is this fuse your pulling or what are you messing with to get the car to start?
