OK guys. Just bought a 99' gs. The kid before me replaced the head gasket and when finished the repair, No spark.

heres what i checked.
- Coil pack
- Fuses
- Its getting fuel
- Crank sensor
- Cam sensor

Im checking everything and more....and its starting to become a PITA
any ideas at all?

Well if you have power to the coil. I can't remember for sure on the 420a, but there are three wires right. One should be a constant, and then two are pulsing. If all of your wires are live then it is your coil pack.

Not familiar with the 420A but I feel fairly certain that they use the power transistor as well. You can use a test light and check your ecu ignition trigger pulse at the transistor connector and go from there.

Edit: didnt catch that last post. Disregard.

ok hate my life...... the CPS and the CAS are not whats wrong. im goingto check the relays tommorrow but so far this is becoming nothing but a headache im about to smash the windows and tell the junk yard to pick it up

did you do proper test with a DMM to see the cps and cas is sending the right voltage

This. You cannot test the cps or cas with just a test light. You have to see what amount of voltage they are sending/receiving and also test for how much resistance the sensor has. Without testing properly you cannot rule those out.

thanks for the help everyone, its been awhile since anyone even looked at the post.

well i tested both the CPS and the CAS and they both get voltage but nothing is getting sent back to the coil pack.....

The CPS test i did
took one wire off the coil pack, took a volt meter to the male end of the coil, cranked the motor looking for plusing voltage from 0.4V and 4.0V and it gets nothing .... i was told to replace the two sensors so i did.
still doesn't want to spark.
im gunna check the ignition relay today because in another forum i seen they had a simular problem.
they went through the whole thing to just chance a 12 dollar part and it started right up.

any ideas before i start beating my head in

check your power transistor (aka. ignition module) . Swap it out with another one. Usually when that goes bad you have no spark. They also come loose sometimes.

thats another test im going to try tonight.... but also how could i possibly bypass the ASD relay and just jump 12v of current to the coil pack.... im reading its a way to see if its bad ...which if it is im gunna change both the fuel relay and ASD relay.. anyone in Jersey?

are you getting a cel?? Also when you turn the key to the on position make sure the check engine light comes on. If it doesnt come on at all you most likely have a bad ecu. When the head gasket got replaced if the battery wasnt disconnected, could have arced something and ruined the ecu.

ok so the coil has 3 screws in it and the last screw screws in but doesn't go all the way down ...more or less its stripped out..... but i've had mechanics tell me thats fine should i tap it out to make sure its tight?

Im checking the junk again....but if anyone is in the area ...please let me know i need help..

having the same problem with mine try the ecu if not check and see if your model has theft deterent this is normally resoved by the security light in your gauge cluster if this is so your car will not start but my model never came equipped with that option(95 rs n/a) but just thought id give u something to think about before you destroy a dsm:nono:

Has anyone figured this out yet? i have a 98 RS with the same problem. Im not getting any fire TO the ignition coil. This problem arose after doing a head change on the motor. The motor waspulled and cleaned up on the outside and inside, the engine bay was cleaned, and then had a new water pump, timing belt, and all gaskets from the Headgasket up replaced. Upon replacing the motor and tranny, we started the car and it ran fine. Noticed that it was leaking a little coolant from around the bottom of the thermastat housing. Turned the car off and fixed this problem. Cranked the car once more. Let it idle for approx. 2 mins. Gave it just a tiny bit of throttle, and when i did it shut off. This has been 2 weeks ago. Has had my mechanic and me stumped. We have tried, new coil, new crank sensor, cam sensor, and still get no power to the ignition coil. Anyone have a clue as to what my problem could be? I feel like it has to be something simple as the car was idling fine before this happened. Checked the timing and its spot on as well. According to Alldata it should be 12 degrees before TDC. Does this sound correct to you guys??? Thanks in advance guys.
