So, I am doing a leak test tomorrow, but I don't think that would be the issue becuase my problem starts before the turbo starts making boost. Is it the 4g63 that has like, no power before 3k rpms or am I just imagining this? Someone tell me something is wrong with my engine.
90 4g64 GSX, all stock.

my 2g had the smaller quicker spooling t25 in it. It ran fine before 3k I just got done with the 14b install about an hour ago and it doesnt show severe lag before 3k> I would say boost leak. Why do people bother with their two cents if its useless? Why would you go put $500 worth of cams in a car that is having issues elsewhere.

DO A BOOST LEAK TEST. Always do that first on a boosted car regardless of the Issue. :hellyeah:

Should a boost gauge be pretty high up on my list of things to buy. And I also have a nother question. I have never had a Turboed car before, and when I shift under boost there is a puff of black smoke out of the exhaust. No cats, no muffler. Is this normal?

Is your blow off valve recirculated back into your intake pipe? If it is then you have a bad boost leak, causing you to run rich in between shifts, visit this website and read read read - VFAQ Site - Visual Frequently Answered Questions

also, how do I do a boost leak test. I read the thread here on doing just leak test. Is it the same thing?

Yes it is the same thing, and remember when you do the boost leak test to keep the throttle plate open with your hand. And yes a boost gauge is the first thing you should buy, make sure you get one that shows vacuum also though, it's very useful in telling you how you're car's running.

Well as for the BOV, I think the person that owned it before me bought a new one that releases into the atmosphere. It is VERY audible under heavy load. If it recirculates its not supposed to be loud right?

Well, if recirculated it will not be "as loud" as vented. Look at your BOV. If you see some sort of tubing that connects from the outlet of the BOV to the intake then you are recirculating. If there is no tube, you are venting.

Ok, so there is a tube that goes from the BOV to the intake manifold it looks like. Is that what you mean, or should it go to the air intake?
Here is a picture.

BTW, is there this much going on in everyone's engine bay or is it just me:confused:

You have an aftermarket bov, the ssqv I believe, you need to recirculate it, it wall cause you to run lean under normal driving and boost, and cause you to run rich between shifts. You should buy a 1g bov with pipe and either keep the ssqv or sell it, they're pretty expensive so you could make some money off it.

Its actually a Turbo XS RFL, as for getting another one thats up to you which one you get, the 1g bov is known for being cheap and good, but there are other that can also be recirculated.:thumb:

To the OP, I know what you mean about not having any low end. I have quite a few mods done to mine and I ran it at an 1/8th mile dragstrip this past sunday and the best it ran was a 10.27 (very disappointing) because it had no ass off the line, and the fact that I'm an auto probably didn't help.

Ok, a couple more questions. It looks like the previous owner rewired the fans to be on at all times. Good or bad?
And then how hard is it to get rid of the AC/if I did how much room would that free up?
I really don't enjoy working in cluttered messes and that engine bay is anything but neat.

From looking at your pic, this is what you need to buy.
A timing belt cover
Battery terminal cover
Battery tie-down
A hose to connect from the valve cover to the intake (NOT a filter)
Upper heat shield to cover exhaust manifold
A different BOV (a 1G will be the cheapest, while still still work very well)
A hose to connect from the new BOV to the intake.
And while you are at it, find something to do with those wires running on top of your fans. Either tuck them away, or get some black wire loom and tuck them inside.

Having the fans run at all times is unnecessary unless you have overheating issues. You have to make sure to remember not to leave your key on acc for long periods of time as it will drain your battery with both fans running. Having them both come on at the same time will work just fine.
It is not hard to get rid of the AC system, and it will definitely help clean up your engine bay.

I think that is the hose you are talking about going from the intake to the vavle cover?
Also, I have a timing belt cover, just need the bolts.
Then the hose to connect the 1G bov, just any old vacuum hose?
And is the heat shield NECESSARY, or just helpful?

No, you want a vacuum hose going from your valve cover port that is on the left hand side, to your air intake (the intake that your air filter and MAF connect to). The hose that you will want to use to recirculate the BOV to your air intake will be rad hose or flex hose, as the ports are much larger than ports for vacuum hose. Usually they are between 1 1/8 and 1 1/4 inch depending on the BOV you get. And I personally think that the heat shield is considered to be more than helpful due to it keeping underhood temps down, as well as keeping heat away from O2 sensor wiring, the alternator, and the plastic fans and shrouds.

Here is what I meant. You want the vacuum hose that is circled in yellow in this picture from the valve cover to the intake.
And you want some rad hose, or flex plastic that is circled in blue to connect from the BOV to the intake.

Is that recirculation tube on the black plastic intake pipe plugged? If not, there's your pre-turbo leak right there. Get a 1g bov and recirculation tube then, your car should run like normal. Also, do a boost leak test and fix any boost leaks you may have.

Here's how a stock 91 engine bay looks. The 90's bov and recir. tube is on the top because the cruise control is on the same side. On 91-94, the cruise control is on the driver's side and the bov and recir. tube is routed underneath.

What are you used to driving? If you're used to something with a bigger engine, yeah this thing will seem like a real dog until the boost comes on.

My car builds boost quick enough that I can't really say a lot about how it is out of boost though since it's usually boosting, plus I have an aluminum flywheel, so in 1st gear it accelerates pretty fast before boost since it revs so quickly.

Yeah, my DD is a 3rd gen eclipse with a diamante 6g74 swapped in, so it's a 3.5L v6. The bottom end pulls WAY more than this dinky little car(though obviously I am building this one and not the DD as this dinky little car can run 9s and the fat whale can run 15s:boring:)

So I think my first project other than the body work is gonna be pulling the AC, since I doubt I'll ever use it, then cleaning up the engine bay(obviously getting the 1g BOV first to recirc it into the intake) and figure out why the hell the guy who owned it wired the fans to run all the time. I think I'll call him tomorrow and see what he was thinking.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I figure I will probably keep asking my questions in here to keep the thread clutter down.
