Okay so i bought a tsi .. as a donor car.

My buddys gsx needs everything in engine bay and has 0 rust. The TSI was rusted out to the point where it couldn't leave driveway..

I'm picking the car up to swap the motor and trans into the GSX..

But it doesn't have intercooler piping, battery or ecu..

I was going to bring the battery and ecu, now do i need piping to start the car just to hear the motor? i feel like it would just be one giant boost leak..

anyone know?
 
just going to have one giant boost leak. You don't technically need an IC, but you need piping from the turbo to the TB

I cant imagine it starting.. thats why when you blow a coupler off (i've done it enough haha), it'll barely run without gas and usually dies.
 
You can get it to run ok if you keep feathering the gas. I would just connect the intake pipe to the throttle body elbow if you just want to hear it run.

Any idea what kind of pipe i can use or tube or some sort? for cheap and homemade to get the car to start to hear the motor?

Go to Home depot, build the tubo to TB pipe from PVC in the dia you need, and get the cheap rubber couplers there too to connect it.
Figure about $20-30

It is just air, not exhaust so the PVC will be just fine.

cheaper still would be to use dryer vent tubing, may hold up to 7=8 psi before it pops.
 
I'd just connect the intake tube to the TB like previously mentioned...$free$

He wants to check the engine /trans out.. that would include the turbo.

He may want to try to drive it around the block to make sure things are "drop in ready" for the planned swap.

If one reads it correctly, he wants to in essance "bypass" the IC pipe and FMIC set up.
 
i'm trying to get away without running a full intercooler set up.

ALL IM TRYING TO DO IS TURN THE MOTOR OVER AND HAVE IT IDLE, IT DOES NOT, I REPEAT, DOES NOT HAVE TO MOVE FROM THAT SPOT.

I wanna listen for the ticks, knocks, or any other noises you know?

If i unplug the MAF, would the car idle fine without piping from turbo to the TB?

if not, i need to get a sort of piping to go from turbo to the TB
 
Uhm... Unplug the maf, crank engine. It should idle just fine. Will probably die if you rev it.

Just what I was thinking.. Pull the Maf plug and start it in "limp mode". It will start and idle and will drive. Just not very fast or well.. But at least you'd be able to hear the motor run.

I also would say go for the pvc pipe idea. Cheap and it would work for what you want.

Yes, it should, unless their are other extenuating circumstances such as failed sensors or a bad ecu. Bad ISC, Vacuum/Boost leaks between the throttle plate and the head.

It will go into limp mode and run the base maps from the ecu. It will be running very rich, and will not want to rev.

But it will idle in the driveway perfectly fine. I always do that before installing all the intercooler piping etc when I dropping an engine back in. Its much easier to check for leaks and fix them without the intercooler piping and intake installed. I usually let it warm up to full operating temp, then check the headbolt/stud torques and then install everything else.
