My car: 1997 Eclipse GST

Well, here's the situation. I've had the problem of the soft clutch for a while. The problem is at its worst right now, I'll have to pump the clutch about 15-20 times to get some pressure to get some pressure to shift.

It doesn't matter what the car is doing, it loses pressure after a few minutes...but sometimes it goes back to normal for a little while (minutes). When I pump the clutch, I can hear a sound from the master cylinder like someone stepping on an air pump (psh, psh).

The master cylinder is not leaking, in fact the system is not leaking at all. I just checked it though and apparently a little bit of fluid was missing. The master cylinder was replaced less than a year ago, but I didn't have the slave cylinder replaced. The clutch is about 6 months old, it's an ACT 2100, properly broke it in back when I had it installed.

Another thing I noticed, the clutch fluid is looking kind of cloudy. The fluid has been bled multiple times with the help of a couple of friends. After bleeding the system, one of them was pumping on the pedal and the other was keeping the fluid reservoir at the proper level so no air was introduced into the line.

I've never adjusted the clutch pedal because I'm not entirely too sure on how to do that and at this point, I'm not sure that it would help.

Any help is appreciated, thanks guys.

Ive been through this before. I kept telling myself "it cant be the master cylinder or the slave cylinder". I bought rebuild kits for both and have never seen the problem since. I got the rebuild kits at www.rockauto.com

Ya, I made an assumption that it was either the slave or the master. I've read a lot of responses to similar questions stating that it could be either or. This afternoon I went ahead and ordered both the master and the slave.

The reason for my post was to just see if it could be something else. Your story is what I like to hear though :p

I went ahead and replaced the slave cylinder first, since the master was replaced less than a year ago.

After replacing the slave, bleeding the system, and adjust the freeplay on the clutch pedal (ACT 2600 clutch)...it feels absolutely perfect. I drove it around for 30 minutes, got on it a bit...no change in pedal pressure what-so-ever.

Replacing the slave is extremely simple, I've got both the factory service manual and the Haynes repair manual...both tell you how to do it step-by-step.

You cursed me! :D My master cylinder went out on the way home from work. Plus an added bonus: my transmission fluid leaks out near the transfer case very quickly only when the clutch is depressed. This is the weirdest one I have seen yet. HAHA!
