So i'm not a newbie with cars, but i'm looking at this 91 talon tsi awd, and i've never had a turbo car. I've had a 240sx and a BMW 325is e36. I've not done extensive modding, but i've upgraded the suspension with coilovers and stuff like that, i've never had to do indepth engine work besides maintanence.

So because i dont know much about building a talon, i just wanted to see what you guys thought of this 1g i was looking at. I plan on adding a front mount and exhaust and supposidly he has nothing to tune the thing, but it runs fine after he rebuilt the head. I know about the 16g turbo, and stuff like that but 95 pistons and stuff like that, i wonder if thats a good thing or a bad thing... Let me know your thoughts, i'd appreciate the help. Also what you think a good price for everything would be. The body is in good shape (small rust spots) as well as the interior. The only thing i see is rusty rotors so i'll probably upgrade immediately after i pick it up. thanks

Heres the mods.

-Brakes are in good shape
-New downpipe (stock)

Sounds good to me. Don't see how much tuning you could possibly need to do, on a stock fuel system.. I'd say not more than $3,000.

How much boost can a get out of the current mods and stock fuel system, or whats a safe psi i can run without trouble... its still at 10psi.

But you should probably upgrade the fuel system, to support the power that the engine COULD make with that big 16g turbo. That's not too hard, though. 225 lph fuel pump and larger injectors, and some form of fuel management.

Well, you'd need a pocketlogger, to log knock, timing, etc.. I'd say with a stock fuel system 10psi is pretty much up there.

How much horsepower do you think i could get out of it if i add a 3inch exhaust and FMIC?? keeping boost at 10..

You can probably run 15 PSI. If you want more then you'll have to upgrade the fuel system and some form of engine management. Do you have a boost controller?

Yea... its set at 10psi. Can i run a tad more boost if i just upgrade the pump, not the injectors. I'm not really trying to go into the motor and change injectors, i'm trying to look for the limit of easy reliable add ons before i open the engine, next spring i will do more involved upgrades. Also, why would the previous owner put in 95 pistons and rods? Is that an upgrade some how?

Injectors took me about 30 minutes to replace, and Ive never done it before, so Its not really going into the engine if your worried about having it be hard. I would get a set a 550's, 190 fuel pump, a safc, and a logger, if I were in your position, because it sounds like youd be happy with that, and you could run upwards of 18-20psi.

Yea that makes sense, i've never done injectors so i guessed it seemed like more work than it really does. Thanks alot for verifying everything. I just dont want to mess anything up either, thats why on some engine parts, i dont know if i should spend the money and have it professionally installed.

is tuning with a safc hard to do?? would i be able to do it myself with some coaching from all of you or just take it somewhere?

What do you think hp wise i'd be running with just the parts above? And how much would i be able to crank out on 18-20 psi?

Sorry for all the questions, i just like getting answers about my specific situation, i appreciate the positive responses.

If you rewire your fuel pump you can run 15-16 psi. Injectors are easy to replace but if you do you'll have to get something to control them SAFC or DSMLink for example. The 95 Pistons are an upgrade because they are lighter (not 100% sure on that though), the 95 rods are a down grade because they are weaker. Don't worry about it at this point.

My advice is rewire the fuel pump (instructions found at VFAQ http://www.vfaq.com/FAQlocator-fuel.html) and turn the boost up to 15 psi. However, make SURE you have no boost leaks or vacuum leaks. You might also consider a pocket logger buy if you plan to get DSMlink later then a pocketlogger is not required.

The pistons from a 95+ car have a higher compression ratio, it is a popular thing to for the 1g motors. I don't think the rods from a 95 are in there though, they won't fit on a 6 bolt crank.

Yeah that's true. He probably has 2G Pistons on 1G rods. 1Gs are 7.6 CR and 2Gs are 8.5.. correct?

I think 1g's are 7.8, I could be wrong though.

To the OP- Looks like a decent car to start with. Just make sure you keep up with the maintenance and you should be good to go:thumb:

I second the boost leak test idea. When you get to modding it, larger injectors, something to control them, and a logger is about all it will take to have some fun with it.
