NEWBIE here...How can we make my car fast?

I just bought a 98 GSX and it has like 36k miles on it, but its an auto. Can I still get a screaming fast car with an auto or do I need to do a 5speed swap, is that even possable?? What basic mods should I do 1st?...Basicly lay down the basics to getting in the 12s with my car...Thanks Guys, you'll be seeing me alot around this site...

Well to get a car in the 12's..especially automatic isnt simply basic...but very possible...Click the Tuning Guide on the options on top of the website...that will tell you what you need...As for a 5speed swap...U dont need it to be fast...And it is possible...altho pricey
 
Follow the tuning guide on this website, and READ ALL YOU CAN ABOUT TUNING. Basically, bigger injectors + bigger turbo + manual boost controller + exhaust + safc + boost gauge = extremely fast.
 
Yes. The tuning guide is the best place to start. You frist mods should probably be a boost gauge and MBC. Maybe even a 1g BOV in there too for starters.

This is well documented , i would go to This site
and read it through, all the frequent questions and basics. Understand how a turbo works and some of your cars basics.

Almost all the vendors lay down steps in order and click the tuning guide on tuners homepage lays it all out.

Maittenance!!!!, free mods,,,The basics would be a boost gauge and upgraded BOV that can hold more boost. then from there intake/ exhaust and crank up the boost. Get rid of the small turbo/get fuel pump/injectors and you can make lots more power. This is a quick run down though there is more to learn along the way including tuning your setup.

5 speed swaps have been done though not THAT common, kinda a pita but mainly because of all the little parts you need along the way.
Luckily, making power with an auto isn't hard, check out club DSM A/T . There is also an auto section of this board. many recommend a tranny cooler for long tranny life and a shift kit. You can also benifet from new endclutches but none of these are very expensive. A torque convertor is great and but isn't necccasily needed to get to 12's because it does =$$$.
 
So theres a chance to make my auot fast...no need for a 5 speed?..I will check out the tech guides..You guys rock!

I've actually seen only one documented case of a guy getting into the 12s with an A/T 2G FWD and that was Warren Daniel. I would recommend a larger turbo like a 20G and then build the piss out of your A/T. End clutches, shift kit, and a higher stall are going to be necessary. You are kind of screwed though because neither quaiffe or Kaaz make an LSD for your car. You might be able to use the phantom grip but I don't know. Also if you want to consider drag radials or slicks it would not be a bad idea.

Also I pulled 13.8@15psi with a 2.0 60ft with a 20g on my A/T FWD. I most likely could have done better with better tuning and 25psi but I moved on to AWD before I could try.

He said hes a GSX in his first post so thats why I think it wouldn't be as bad.
I though there was more FWD autos faster then that. Kiggly runs like 9 something and is manual now I believe. I thought he was solid 10s w/ his auto FWD car. Maybe his setup is extreme though. I thought for sure there were some more FWD autos in the 12's.

quite a few FWD auto guys 12 and under. Though definetly not a common road.
 
Your absolutely right, but look at them. They are all 1Gs. Don't ask me why but finding a 2G that has done it is hard and rare. Kiggly got deep into the 10s with his A/T on his 1G before switching over to a M/T and that's when he got into the 9s. I believe that either he or TRE said that you could really see where he was maxing out the A/Ts limits and that while 9s might have been possible on the A/T it was just not logical because of the wear the A/T was seeing.

I think a FWD A/T can do it I just think that people give up long before it gets done. As to the original statement you made about it being a GSX. My bad :).

Yeah you should have no problems getting into the 12s with an A/T GSX. I would still do the tranny build up though if you want the car to last. A/Ts need tranny buildup when you start crossing that 300hp threshold.

Well I know a kid from New York that was low 12's high 11's with an auto...Its very possible...Check out NYCCDSM.com and ull see it there

Right, I'm not questioning if a 2G AWD A/T can do it. I'm saying that for a 2G FWD A/T to do it is rare and I've only seen one actual documented case of it happening.
