Newbie dsmlink question

I have never used anything besides an safc2 or afc neo on my cars.
I cant afford a dsm link rite now seeing how i blew all my money on parts:)
So im wondering can i tune my car with my buddys dsm link then take it out and monitor with just my gauges?
 
No, DSMlink requires the DSMlink eprom on your ECU.

A cheaper less tunable option would be to chip it if you've got an eprom setup.
 
I have an eprom ecu.
But if i went the chip route how would i controll my air and fuel precisely(sp)
To get the most power possible.
I know an afc neo isnt ganna no where near control my 1000cc injectors.
 
there is't away to do that, you ether have to go dsmlink or stand alone.

as tkelly27 said, you cant use a friends ecu to tune and then yank it, because the ecu holds the info for the setup. As soon as you pull it and put yours back it, it will run on the stock setup.
 
Im new to this whole tunning thing.I have only ever used the safc2 or afc neo.Just really learned how to use that correctly.
So anything besides that im lost.
What about wideband?
This guy said he will tune my car with his wideband for 100.
His car runs 8.83.
 
The chip is burnt with the data to control the bigger injectors. You can use the AFC to dial it in exactly.

He's just made so many that he can get it pretty spot on from what I've heard. You send him the car data and he makes you a non modifiable tune.

There are some links on what exactly the chips are doing to your stock computer. If you're handy with a soldering iron and have some free time you can do it yourself.

With a DSMlink they have it setup so that there is a programable eprom on board and modifies the way the link talks to the ECU
'Basically, we take your factory EPROM ECU, socket the chip, and reprogram it. Our laptop software then talks to this ECU through the standard diagnostic port located under your dash using our provided cable. We do not use the factory protocol, though. We have our own communication scheme entirely. The factory interface simply does not provide any of the features of DSMLink. So the basic components are an EPROM chip, a cable, and some laptop software. The 1G version also includes an add-on memory board. The adapter cable included with DSMLink is specially made for this application and incorporates features not found in other adapters."

So to fine tune with a standard chip you either need to pull it out and put it back in, or create a flashable setup, not easy to do.

My advice? Save up for a DSMlink and keep your trigger happy right foot under control until you get it ;)

For $170 you can get your own wideband and tell him to kiss your arse, especially if he was going to use the AFC to do it. A lot of people use AFCs, personally I would only use it if I had no other choice.

If you plan on modding your car, you should learn how to tune it yourself too. Any big part changes can render the tune null and void :(
 
Thanks for all the info.
I want to tune it myself.But i blew all my money on my engine build.
He was ganna throw it on the dyno and tune it.
But i think ill sell my crotch rocket and buy a dsm link.
