Looking for some info from the dsm crowed in New York. My wife and I our thinking about moving to New York. I have a 91 GSX, and i was wondering how hard it is to get your car smogged when it has lots of mods? Or could I just keep my car registered in florida with out any issues in New York?

idk which part of NY you going to, but I know NYC has a ton of places that would pass you as long as you pay.

Your looking for problems when you have a NYS license and your car is registered to you in a different state... You have 30 days to change both when you move. NY inspection is harder to pass with 96+ cars with OBD2. Depends on what shady place you go to in NY that wont check for a cat on your older vehicles.

You have a 1992, which means you're fine. Anything above a '95 requires an ODBII read that is sent to the NYS DMV. Unless you don't have a Check Engine Light (CEL), you won't pass inspection. But as I stated, since you have a 1992, you are not required to perform the ODBII portion of the inspection. You can pretty much get a sticker from any 'local shop.' Don't try to get it at dealers or chain-store mechanics.

I have dsmlink so I'm not to worried about check engine lights. Thanks for the info. If we move we will be located around the Huntington station area.

They should look underneath and make sure you have a converter, but that's about it for a pre 96 vehicle. Technically they should look under the hood and see if you still have your EGR too, but most techs probably wouldn't even notice if it were missing on a 4G63. All that they do is a visual inspection for emissions in NY. When I took in my Colt they asked what engine is in it once, and I said 1.5L and they just said "ok", and passed it.

Heck, I even drove a 91 Laser on an 89 Ramcharger Chassis for a few years. It had a 5.2 V8, and 35" tires.

While this is very much true, I've been in IL now for over a year and live here but have been driving on MI plates the entire time and have had no problems.

I'd even say it has saved me from numerous tickets, though most of them had to do with loud muffler, tint, or no front plate.
