new turbo blew!!!

Ok so i just installed a brand new garret 57 trim on my freshly built 6 bolt engine (Both had 0 miles) so i began the break in process and at 180 miles (20 miles before suggested oil breakin change) i started to hear the turbine hittin the walls on the inlet checked turbo for shaft play and sure enough, tons but there was no smoke from the exhaust what could have caused this ???:sosad:
 
I'm not too smart on these things. But I do know that you are not supposed to run a good turbo on a brand new motor. The best thing to do is break it in with an old t25 or something.
 
Low oil pressure

Oil pressure plays a big role in turbos and if your not receiving sufficeint oil pressure to your turbo constantly, it will blow

This is true because of the fact that some new motors will shed metal into the oil pan, which will lead its way into the turbo oil feed line (hense the reason people use micro filters)

It really depends on who you ask about breaking in motors with old turbo's but its better safe than sorry...

Theres also the chance the turbo was bad to begin with.. wouldnt be the 1st time from some vendors ;)
 
Thank u guys i was thinking my oil pressure also because i have steel braided line its about 3ft long and it only needs to go from the feed port and the head the the top of the turbo and ill def get a 14b until 500 miles is on the engine
 
There are plenty of guys running Garrett turbos to the head without oil pressure issues. I actually feel it's the best location....especially for a balance shaft-less engine- giving all turbos adqeuate pressure under normal operations without the worry of too much oil pressure blowing oil past the seals and eventually ruining the journal bearings.

I've been rebuilding turbos quite a while and I've seen many more turbos on modded engines destroyed by too much pressure coming from the filter housing than too little pressure coming from the head.



There has to be some other issue. If the turbo was getting any oil at all it shouldn't have died in such little mileage with little or no load on it (as recommended for the engine during the initial break-in period).

Personally I schedule my first oil change at the 50 mile mark for newly-rebuilt engines. You'd be surprised just how much metal is in the oil after only 50 easy miles. The next scheduled change would be at 300 miles, then 1000, then resume your normal oil change interval.

But I do know that you are not supposed to run a good turbo on a brand new motor.

Really? So if I bought a brand new Evo X tomorrow I'd have to take it back to the dealer to have a new turbo installed at the 200-mile mark?

You dont know anything about the engine rebuild... like who built it.. did the machine shop bore the clearance for the pistons correctly etc etc...

People like to use old turbo's to break in new engines because of the fact that something might have gone wrong during the build process.. better safe than sorry..

Plenty of things can go wrong with aftermarket pistons (piston slap for instance), if you bought an Evo X, i doubt you'd have much trouble with STD size bore/pistons :hmm:

well my stock oil pressure gauge stopped working before the engine build and when the new 6 bolt was put in it barley worked so i did a manual pressure test and at idle i had 30-60 psi i think the reason for it fluctuating so bad is i had pretty bad idle surge it would go from 7 to 14 and cant figure out why
 
Just look for a 14b or t25 and throw it on there till you break in the engine well into the 2000 mark to be on the safe side. Then slap on the turbo of your choice with new oil.
 
You guys are crazy.. What do guys do that aren't running stock manifolds then? Change their entire setup to put on a crappy turbo? I don't think so. Manifold, turbo, oil feed, drain, exhaust. etc.. Nothing would match up for such a thing.
 
just ordered one of those and now i play the waiting game. So What could of caused it to fail? Just not changin the oil fast enough? or just bad turbo?
I'd be interested in tearing your turbo down and seeing if it's full of metal or not. That will tell us for sure what the problem is.

Your issue almost directly follows the symptoms of a turbo that wasn't balanced properly, but this is not a common trait of a Garrett-built turbo....very common on the Chinese-built turbos, however.

I will definitly check the turbo for metal tomorrow and let you guys know.. i keep hearing that you have to break in the turbo also before you drive hard on it dont know how true it is considering the turbo really only needs oil

Ok then, run a filter. Or risk you turbo.
