new to timing adjustment, need help

i just changed the timing belt on ym car, water pump etc. (2g) and when i start it up all seems ok, but once i hit 4k rpm's it makes a noise like a vacuum that has a string caught in the brushes. not a whining or a grind. checked the timing, it seems to be off a bit. read the posts on vfaq.com and they arent very clear. i changed the idle with the biss and that helped that issue. any recommendations or pics?
 
If the teeth are off at all you can cause internal damage to your motor. If that is all you changed you may have got it wrong and have valve's hitting the pistons. Only way to change timing is to take the belt off and redo it. Changing the base timing will do nothing. I would line up all the marks and if any of them on the timing belt are off your cam timing is off and needs to be fixed immediately.
 
i changed almost everything to do with the timing belt, i made sure ALL things checked out fine, it runs fine, the idle was a little lower than b4, so i adjusted the biss and that fixed it no q's asked. but when i run the timing light on it, it seems off a bit. and the noise is bad along with the power output, like its trying to hard at high rpm's (4k and up).
 
Ignition timing shouldn't be off. Has nothing to do with cam timing but to adjust it you have to ground the plug behind the battery. It will allow you to adjust the timing. Otherwise the computer will compensate and move it back.
 
because if it was something as bad as the valves knocking, i wouldnt be able drive it without the car going nuts, correct?

When you replaced the timing belt, did you do anything with the cam angle sensor? Without the appropriate plug grounded, timing will bounce around 8 degrees viewed with the timing light. I'm not convinced your problem is with the ignition timing just yet.

ok, i kinda understand what u mean. i made an attempt to not turn over the engine at all when changing the belts or pulleys, but i dont believe i grounded anything. i still cant get over the fact that its only after 4k, i have never seen this b4. i mean its possible it does it under 4k, its just to quiet to hear. thnx for the help guys
 
but the vibration that this causes, will it be noticable when turning the car on? cause it idles fine, so i could see how this could be the problem, but... you never know i guess

I had a hard time getting past 4,000 RPMS in fact at 4,500 RPMS my car sounded like I was at 7,500 RPMS. It turned out that my Knock Sensor backed itself out and was giving the ECU false knock readings so it was messing up the timing. I went ahead and replaced the knock sensor to be safe (since it was banging around) and the car has run perfect ever since. So you might want to check your knock sensor.
 
ok, say it were the knock sensor, could i have the car scanned and it will tell me this? becuase after spending the time doing the timing belt, the last thing i want to do it take the car apart again.

I don't know if you'd be able to notice the effects of an out of phase balance shaft at idle. I've never had one 180 out before. :) It definitely wouldn't hurt to check this though.

Taking your car to be scanned will only be helpful if you have a CEL. Without a light, there is nothing to scan.

The knock sensor is located on the rear of the engine underneath the intake manifold. It's a pain to reach, but you should be able to get in there from under the car to see if it backed out. I don't really think this is your problem, though. Sure, it could cause similar symptoms, but I would stick to the things that you recently changed for now.
