help with timing adjustment?

Ok I am trying to advance my timing. I found the connector that I am supposed to ground out when I adjust the timing, but when I ground it out it shuts spark off to #1 and #4 wires. so how am I supposed to check my timing or adjust it?

I think you found the connector for hooking up the tach in the engine compartment.
The timing check connector won't do that. IIRC the correct connector is closer to the battery.
