hey, ive been browsing these forums for a while now, but just registered today.
i used to own a 99 honda prelude (turboed)... anyways i dont want to start a honda vs dsm war thats not why im posting.
i recently bought a 98 GS-T. got a great deal on it (had minor front passanger side dmg but i fixed it up to look like new).
anyways i have just replaced all belts/pullies/tensionisers etc. car had a kindda big oil leak so i switched the belts cause oil was on them (and we all know oil corrodes rubber ;) ), oil leak was also fixed in the prosses
anyways i had to switch my CV boot, new front and rear discs + pads, clutch and thow out bearings. well enough background i want to ask some questions.

anyways i was wondering,

1) are dsm supposed to be this loud??? my friend says that its normal and that dsm's are kindda loud engines, specially the turbo ones. but i still want to ask :coy:

2) when i hit turbo i get an exhaust kindda smell, i was thinking theres a boost leak, but it doesnt smell when im driving at like 2-3k rpm only when i go higher or the BOV goes off.

3) ive searched the forums on how to remove broken bolts, i broke the head off a bolt on the heat shield , and i understand the whole drill a small hole into the center of the bolt and then extract it bit... but my question is how exactlly does this extractor thing work??? is it like a drill bit, or is it hand tightened per say?

4) my trunk doesnt pop? when i pull the latch thing someone has to hold the trunk open while i have lever thing pulled up. how would i go along fixing this? does this have something to do with shock supports being shot?? or is there some spring thats just not doing its job?

5) how do i know if my car came with a factory security system? i have keyless entry (supposedly) and it says security by where the CEL light is when i turn the car off... but the previous owner lost the clicker thing and he said he never knew if it had a security system either WTF

6) when im driving i hear this wierd sound comming from my back passanger side tire (this tire goes flat if i dont drive my car and just leave it sitting) so not sure wth that is? ill go for a drive tomorrow and give a more accurate "diagnostic"

last question, for now, im gonna need a new splash guard (the one that goes under the engine part) and the wheel well spash guards (not sure if there is one that goes under the car and connects to the bumper actually exists on a dsm, but i think i have the "remains" of what used to be one hanging under my car... ill try to get some pictures of what im talking about

anyways nice to be a part of the dsm world, gonna miss not being able to take my entire car apart with a 8mm socket wrench.... but meh thats no fun either :p

edit: before i forget... the previous owner had these really ghey guages installed and they kindda messed up the tach and speedo (it will say im doing 40 in 1st gear @ 1k rpm, and then say im doing 170 in 2nd gear at 3k rpm) if i buy stock or go junk yard searching, for those guages will they work by just poping them in, or do i have to syncronize them? or is there a way to just unplug the needle and plug it back in hoping that they start working again :p

1) Define 'this loud'. Check for exhaust leaks.

2) A boost leak would be defined as a leak when you're under boost. 2-3K, you are very unlikely to be boosting. Also, make certain that your 'BOV' is recirculated to the intake pipe... venting to the atmosphere (without the other required modifications, usually a MAF-T and GM MAS in blowthrough mode) will make you run pig-rich between shifts, and is one of the most common DSM newbie mistakes. Read the Newbie FAQ.

3) Drill a small hole.. one that is a good amount smaller than the inner diameter of the bolt (not counting the threads) you're trying to remove. Then screw in the extractor bit. Keep screwing it in, and it SHOULD unscrew the broken-off bolt in the process.I usually use a power drill to get it started, then switch to a crescent wrench if the chuck starts slipping, or the drill doesn't have enough torque.

4) Most likely a misadjusted or stuck latch mechanism. Your struts have nothing to do with popping it out of the latch mechanism.

5) You likely have the factory security system and keyless entry. Only place I know of to get a new key fob is Satan (aka: Mitsubishi dealership). They love your money. Finding one on eBay is an option if you know how to set the code, and what your code is. I do not know how, myself.

6) Not much to recommend on this one, with that description. Since it's a GS-T, it's likely either the tire, rim, a misbalanced wheel, screwy floating caliper, warped rotor, or dying bearing. But those are just off the top of my head. I'd lean toward either a damaged rim (leading to a misbalanced wheel) or damaged tire, due to the leak.

Just grab an 8mm and a 12mm socket and you should be set.

I know of no way to reset the speedo/tach needles if they've been removed. Getting one from the junkyard could possibly work, please note that your odometer reading needs to be retained with the car for legal reasons... most people just get a plate made at a trophy shop and pop-rivet it on. May try asking at the Mitsu dealer when you're by for your keychain fob.

2. if you smell exhaust, then you would have an exhaust leak. if a boost leak had a smell it would be air. if your boost leak smells like exhaust, i don't think a boost leak would be the problem to worry about.

ok i got the bolt out :D thanks for the advice :thumb:

the bov is recirculating, but i realized one of the tubes was leaking a bit so that solved some of the "smell" problem...

that wheel/tire is most likely going to get scrapped cause its annoying me quite a bit.

my odometer still works fine, my mechanic told me that if i get the same guage cluster and exchange it, i should have no problems (he tunes/builds dsm's and evos so im hopping hes not wrong, cause the stealership wants 400$ for those guages :( )

anyways thanks for the help much appreciated

btw for the exhaust smell question, you guys think it could be the cat??? i say this because maybe the cat is bad, and gets "overwhelmed" when i hit boost?
