Hey guys im new to 1g dsm's and i have some questions im hopeing to get answered just to get me started. Im curious on a stock gsx 1g motor what kind of hp can the stock internals withhold? How much can the transmission withhold? Im going to do a 1g build and im just kinda wanting to get a good perspective for what the best way to do this is. Let me know what you think!

First off, Welcome! Good to see another Coloradan on the boards.

Your question is a bit vague. There are 2 different 1g engines. The 6-bolt and the 7-bolt. The 7-bolt can hold between 400-450hp pretty safely. The stock 6-bolt however can make over 600hp on a well maintained and tuned engine. I believe the record currently is around 750hp and 9 second 1/4miles. Not bad for a 20 year old factory engine. The transmissions are iffy. Some have ran the stock manual and auto transmissions well over 500hp with no issues. Some run into issues as soon as the power gets bumped up. Lucky for you, you live just a short trip from Jacks Transmission which is one of the best transmission shops for our cars. It would be best to have your trans at least inspected and serviced before trying to make any serious power.

But all of this is with 2 very important things.

1. Maintenance. The strongest engine in the world won't last long if not kept up with. And I don't just mean oil changes. I mean timing belt, transmission service, plugs and wires, fuel filter, etc etc. If you just recently bought the car, regardless of what the previous owner said he has done, do every bit of maintenance you can think of.

2. Supporting mods. There is much more to making power than how much your engine can take. Injectors, turbos, fuel pumps, clutches, and even tuning devices and fuel types have horsepower limitations. If you are shooting for a specific power range, make sure you research which parts work and which don't.

Is there certain years of DSM that had the 6 bolt to the 7 bolt? Fo rexample from 1990-93 gsx had 6 bolt or something? Ho wmuch psi woul dbe god to run through a stock 6 bolt?

Mid 92 was when they switched to 7 bolt engines. Engines also arent limited by boost. You could run 40psi on a small turbo just fine while 40psi on a large turbo would blow the engine. Horsepower is the limiting factor.

An average comfortable consensus would be about 400-50hp/tq for the healthy engine with stock internals and factory good condition transmission.

Of course they will both likely "wear" faster with more power, and certainly with aggressive driving.

The trans will be the waekest point.

My exp is that the factory clutch can barely handle 250-300hp you will def need a act2600 or similar type clutch (or 2100 if fwd)

Auto trans are pretty much bulletproof.

So the first thing to go is the clutch @ about 250-300 tq, then the trans internals at 4-500, and the at about the sa,e time (headgasket, head lift most likely to occur)

Theoretically, the engine can handle tons of power, the problem is when something extreme happens that isnt supposed to. Knock/detonation can blow out a oem headgasket with oem head bolts and dump coolant into a cylinder then pop goes the weasel.

So as long as you are very careful and precise, all you will need is a clutch, and headstuds, maybe a headgasket.

But once you realize how much its gonna cost you to get to 400-500, internal engine and trans mods are relatively cheap for reliability... you will end up spending 4000+ on turbo tuning fuel etc... and the same on internals

Well I'm not looking to spend too much money just get my hands dirty and have some fun. 400hp would be my top goal maybe lower I just wanna learn a lot. Thanks for the advice fellas. Im thinking with 16g turbo injectors front mont exhaust intake and BOV I can get into the three range.

With ARP Headstuds and a fresh headgasket, you can get 4-500 on the stock engine.

But I'd start with timing belt, waterpump, and if you can swing it while you have the motor torn down that far, a set of arps, and a fresh headgasket.

Then move on to other stuff like cv axles, tie rod ends etc. Get it in tip top shape before trying to push it.

Ok so ive been looking at the things you guys said and i have a few more questions before i get started. What turbo is good to run for that hp range that wont break my bank? I am also curious am i going to need alot of tning for that hp range 350-450hp...if i do what do you suggest i would like to do it myself. Am i going to need a manual boost controller and all that as well? sorry im new to builds just trying to squeeze as much infor as i can out of you guys haha

A holset h1c would be a good choice. They can be bought for 200-300 in good condition. From there you can buy a bullseye turbine housing for 150 and it will bolt to the stock manifold and o2 housing.

If OP has a 6-bolt, standard ARP studs are a downgrade from the stock head bolts.

Take a look at this link. It will tell you basically everything you need to know about getting to 300-400hp.

My only suggestion in this link would be to substitute #14 with DSMLink or Ostrich rathe rthan use an SAFC.

Standard arp's are quite a bit better than the stock 1g head bolts. Where did you hear that they weren't?
